“…Thus, these observed yields are equivalent to 1.26 and 1.17 g COD/g COD for Reactor 1 and 2, respectively. These values are greater than typical observed yields of activated sludge (0.3–0.5 g COD/g COD), , which implies phototrophic assimilation of CO 2 into the OPG biomass during SBR operation. These results imply that the OPG process has the potential to recover wastewater’s chemical energy (i.e., COD) and solar energy in the form of easily separable granular biomass.…”

“…The photo-trophic biomass in the OPG generates oxygen through photosynthesis for organic oxidation or nitrification and utilizes the carbon dioxide for its growth [160] and can be operated in stirred-tank reactors without aeration [157]. Accordingly, due to photoautotrophic utilization of CO 2 , OPG managed to generate biomass 1.17-1.26 g COD/g COD that are 3-4 times more than the CAG which is 0.3-0.5 g COD/g COD [161,162]. The electricity consumption of the OPG system is 359 Wh m −3 and 269 Wh m −3 is supplied by the combustion of the produced biogas and 90 Wh m −3 by electricity from the grid [160].…”
