Performance of a multiplex polymerase chain reaction panel for identifying bacterial pathogens causing pneumonia in critically ill patients with COVID-19

Abstract: The FilmArray® Pneumonia Plus (FA-PP) panel can provide rapid identifications and semi-quantitative results for many pathogens. We performed a prospective single-center study in 43 critically ill patients with COVID-19, in which we performed 96 FA-PP tests and cultures of blind bronchoalveolar lavage (BBAL). FA-PP detected one or more pathogens in 32% (31/96 of samples), whereas culture methods detected at least one pathogen in 35% (34/96 of samples). The most prevalent bacteria detected were Pseud… Show more

“…In line with previous works, we found that respiratory bacterial co-infections are quite common in critically ill COVID-19 patients (more than 30% of positive cultures), with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (14.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (6.9%) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.5%) the most detected pathogens ( Caméléna et al, 2021 ; Maes et al, 2021 ; Hughes et al, 2020 ).…”

“…However, molecular detection methods might be an important tool in future studies. 33,34 So far, only few studies have investigated fungal superinfections in COVID-19 patients. [13][14][15]17,[35][36][37] The significance of viral reactivation remains unclear.…”

“…The slightly higher prevalence rate of VAP is likely attributable to the use of the multiplex PCR technology. 31 We are aware of no other reports of the incidence of VAP in severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia.…”
