Performance of a large scale prototype of the ATLAS accordion electromagnetic calorimeter

Abstract: A 2 metre long prototype of a lead-liquid argon electromagnetic calorimeter with accordionshaped electrodes, conceived as a sector of the barrel calorimeter of the future ATLAS experiment at the LHC, has been tested with electron and pion beams in the energy range 10 to 287 GeV. A sampling term of 10%= p E(GeV) was obtained for electrons in the rapidity range 0 < < 1, while the constant term measured over an area of about 1 m 2 is 0.69%. With a cell size of 2.7 cm the position resolution is about 4 mm= p E(GeV… Show more

“…The total energy was calculated from the following relation: E tot = ( E ps + E 1 + E 2 + E 3 ), where E ps , E 1 , E 2 , E 3 refer to the signals collected in the presampler and the three calorimeter radial compartments, , and are weights introduced to minimize the width of the energy distribution and is an overall calibration coe cient. Standard position-dependent energy corrections were applied to the calorimeter in order to correct for the shower containment i n and the modulation of the transverse LAr thickness in [1]. Figure 6 shows the energy resolutions obtained with the copper and the optical links.…”

“…A prototype has been built by the RD3 collaboration, see gure 1. Its dimensions are slightly di erent from those quoted previously in order to match the existing 2 m prototype of the electromagnetic (e.m.) calorimeter [5]. It covers 9 in which corresponds to one e.m.…”
