This article presents a mathematical model for estimating the direction of the maximal global solar irradiance (MGSI) based on actual values of direct/beam and diffuse irradiance, model that can be used to determine a correct value of the global collecting efficiency of solar tracking systems. Using this model, the collecting efficiency can be improved by tracking the solar conversion surface to minimize its incidence angle with the maximal global irradiance instead of the beam irradiance. The analysis of the numerical results obtained using in-field data-based simulations showed a significant improvement of the real collecting efficiency, especially during cloudy days when the diffuse irradiance is preponderant.

With the rising global awareness of the negative impacts of power plants based on fossil fuels, nations are shifting their attention to renewable energy. This is in line with the recent advancements in photovoltaic (PV) technology to encourage the construction of more large-scale solar PV plants. Different types of PV tracking technologies are normally used in these plants. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies to determine which of these PV tracking technologies is the most economically viable. This paper aims to address this issue by assessing actual recorded data from a solar PV plant in Australia as well as simulated data from a PV system design software. The operational performance and economics of the PV systems are studied by calculating and comparing the capacity factors and levelized costs of energy (LCOE). This study can provide insights on the economic feasibility of different PV tracking technologies to allow PV owners and investors to be well-informed in expecting the return on their investments. Meeting the Electrical Energy Needs of a Residential Building with a Wind-Photovoltaic Hybrid System

A complete hybrid system including a photovoltaic cell, a wind turbine, and battery is modeled to determine the best approach for sizing the system to meet the electrical energy needs of a residential building. In evaluating system performance, the city of Tehran is used as a case study. Matlab software is used for analyzing the data and optimizing the system for the given application. Further, the cost of the system design is investigated, and shows that the electrical cost of the hybrid system in Tehran is 0.62 US$/kWh, which is 78% less expensive than a wind turbine system and 34% less expensive than a photovoltaic system.
