Performance inspection and defect cause analysis of girth weld of high steel grade pipeline

Abstract: The suspected circumferential weld defects found in the pipeline inspection process were tested and studied. It was found that there was slag inclusion in the girth weld at 9 o’clock, which had not been found in the early stage or in the laboratory nondestructive testing process. The defects are most likely due to incomplete slag removal between layers and low welding wire energy. There was a root crack at the 6 o’clock position of the weld, and the crack length was 10 mm, which was close to the original film … Show more

“…Many factors affect the failure risk of girth welds in oil and gas transmission pipelines, but the industry generally agrees that the three key factors are the pipe materials and properties, weld defects, and loads [26,30]. Based on the samples collected, the factors that cause girth weld failures can be divided into three categories: pipe type and performancerelated indicators, defect-related indicators, and load-related indicators.…”

“…Almost all long-distance oil and gas pipelines and station facilities pipelines are completed by the welding process. Welding quality directly affects the safety of pipelines and station facilities along the line [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] . According to statistics, most of the pipeline failure cases are caused by girth weld defects, and the more complex the butt structure, the greater the probability of failure.…”
