Performance indicators for radiation protection management: suggestions from the European Society of Radiology

Abstract: In 2013, the new European Basic Safety Standards Directive 2013/59/Euratom (BSS Directive), which defines the new legal framework for the use of ionising radiation in medical imaging and radiotherapy, was published. In 2014, the ESR EuroSafe Imaging Initiative was founded with a goal in mind “to support and strengthen medical radiation protection across Europe following a holistic, inclusive approach”. To support radiology departments in developing a programme of clinical audit, the ESR developed a Guide to Cl… Show more

“…Internal clinical audits should also be performed, focused on the most important aspects of the workflow, like justification, and the support of relevant international organisations [32] or professional societies [33,7] could be sought for its implementation. Efficiency of equipment use should be integrated in the management policy; implementation of key performance indicators (KPIs) should be developed [52,53] and adapted to the local setting. Audit and KPIs should help to monitor the overall organisation, including the primary and secondary levels which would be under the responsibility of the COR.…”

“…The meridians of each part of the aorta and coronary artery also need to be described in the CTA report for the preparation of aortic surgery. Now more and more doctors choose to perform aortic CTA and coronary CT at the same time, but multi-CTA causes increased radiation and contrast agent doses for patients (30)(31)(32)(33). With the developed technology, the technique of aortic CTA combined with coronary CTA has become a research focus for radiologists.…”

“…Key performance indicators (KPIs) used for imaging departments frequently focus on productivity, and rarely on quality, safety and (more difficult to define) value contributions. The ESR has attempted to define appropriate quality-based KPIs for radiation protection [ 24 ]. Similarly, we should strive to define meaningful KPIs which would more-accurately demonstrate the breadth of our contributions to healthcare, beyond study or report numbers.…”
