On the demand of many applications, vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications have attracted many researchers' attentions. In the developments of traffic safety applications based on VANET, the dissemination delay is critical. The dissemination delay of safety messages in the form of text has been studied thoroughly. In contrast, the dissemination delays of video or audio safety messages are just emerging and there are still a lot of things to be done. Considering the poor communication environment of multimedia safety messages dissemination in V2V, the analysis of multimedia message dissemination delay has great significance in the traffic safety applications. By extending and integrating previous achievements of analyzing MAC access delay in video stream dissemination, we proposed a method for modeling the relay access delay of IEEE 802.11p in the multihop relay chain of VANETs. Simulation results showed that the cumulative distribution function, the expectation, and the standard deviation of the relay access delays can be calculated effectively. In addition, the impacts of the number of hops and the length of packets on the relay access delays have been properly evaluated. Our study would open these research issues for discussion, which will contribute to the design and implementation of traffic safety.

Video transfers using smartphones are becoming increasingly popular. To prevent the interception of content from eavesdroppers, video flows must be encrypted. However, encryption results in a cost in terms of processing delays and energy consumed on the user's device. We argue that encrypting only certain parts of the flow can create sufficiently high distortion at an eavesdropper preserving content confidentiality as a result. By selective encryption, one can reduce delay and the battery consumption on the mobile device. We develop a mathematical framework that captures the impact of the encryption process on the delay experienced by a flow, and the distortion seen by an eavesdropper. This provides a quick and efficient way of determining the right parts of a video flow that must be encrypted to preserve confidentiality, while limiting performance penalties. In practice, it can aid a user in choosing the right level of encryption. We validate our model via extensive experiments with different encryption policies using Android smartphones. We observe that by selectively encrypting parts of a video flow one can preserve the confidentiality while reducing delay by as much as 75% and the energy consumption by as much as 92%.

Ultrahigh definition video streaming has been explored in recent years. Most recently the possibility of 4kUHD video streaming over wireless 802.11n was presented, using preencoded video. Live encoding for streaming using x264 has proven to be very slow. The use of parallel encoding has been explored to speed up the process using CUDA. However there hasnot been a parallel implementation for video streaming. We therefore present for the first time a novel implementation of 4kUHD live encoding for streaming over a wireless network at low bitrate indoors, using CUDA for parallel H264 encoding. Our experimental results are used to verify our claim.
