Performance evaluation of the Boron Coated Straws detector with Geant4

Abstract: The last decade has witnessed the development of several alternative neutron detector technologies, as a consequence of upcoming neutron sources and upgrades, as well the world-wide shortage of 3 He. One branch of development is the family of 10 B-based gaseous detectors. This work focuses on the boron coated straws (BCS) by Proportional Technologies Inc., a commercial solution designed for use in homeland security and neutron science. A detailed Geant4 simulation study of the BCS is presented, which investiga… Show more

“…These neutrons are not transmitted and are lost from the beam. It should be noted that, experimentally, the difference between scattered and measured neutrons is one of detector geometry, as has been discussed elsewhere [10]. λ is the neutron wavelength.…”

“…The LoKi detector modules were intensively tested at ISIS during the R&D and production phases as well as in GEANT4 simulations [46]. The data reduction and analysis, including the position calibration of the straw tubes, is expected to be more complex than for the 3 He-based technologies currently employed on time-of-flight SANS instruments due to the larger number of detection elements arranged in a volume [17].…”

“…The boron-coated straw tube structure used in this paper is referenced from the literature (Klausz et al, 2019), a cluster-type straw tube consists of 7 base tubes as shown in Figure 1, each base tube is coated with 1 μM thick 90% 10 B abundance B 4 C on the inner wall, and the tube length is 50 cm. The detector system is referenced from AWCC (Canberra, 2005) for the rest of the dimensional structure except for the detector tube.…”
