Performance evaluation of survival regression models in analysing Swedish dental implant complication data with frailty

Abstract: The use of inappropriate methods for estimating the effects of covariates in survival data with frailty leads to erroneous conclusions in medical research. This study evaluated the performance of 13 survival regression models in assessing the factors associated with the timing of complications in implant-supported dental restorations in a Swedish cohort. Data were obtained from randomly selected cohort (n = 596) of Swedish patients provided with dental restorations supported in 2003. Patients were evaluated ov… Show more

“…10 Interestingly, these criteria have been maintained in many other studies from the same group even after the definition of the 2017 Consensus. 7,10,11,[14][15][16][17] Taking into consideration the related findings reported in all their manuscripts using this same series, this distinguished group of researchers in peri-implantitis used a combination of intraoral radiographs (78.1% of implants) and panoramic radiographs (21.9% of implants) for evaluating bone loss. 10 It is even more interesting that to define the onset and pattern of progression of peri-implantitis in their population, the assessment was solely based on radiographic and not clinical signs of progressive MBL.…”

“…For a Cox regression shared frailty model, the data were organized according to Cleves et al and Fagbamigbe et al ( 28 , 29 ), as I = 1, …, n groups (clusters) with j = 1, …, k subjects (calves) within group i . Assume conditional on frailty V i , for the j th subject in the i th group, the hazard is…”

“…Bayesian parametric (Weibull) Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) model was used to determine the factors associated with time-to-remission. This approach has been reported to perform better than the frequentist approach and the Cox semi-parametric models in the literature [27,28]. STATA version 15 was employed in the analysis.…”
