Discrete, non-virtualized network elements are characterized by large costs, limited functions, vendor lock-in, and limited orchestration. Virtualization technologies like virtual machines (VM) and containers have expanded the scope of virtual resource utilization through consolidation of workloads that were previously running on multiple servers by running them on a single server. With the advent of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), industries are able to reduce the micro-economic factors associated with vendor proprietary model such as transaction costs and (physical and human) asset specificity to deal with vendor vulnerabilities in contractual relationships because Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) can virtualize dedicated networking functions that were traditionally performed by vendor appliances such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers. Even though virtualization technologies (VMs and containers) and NFV have demonstrated their benefits in the market, little attention has been devoted to the development and adoption of containers to build VNFs. This research paper identifies micro-economic factors, such as transaction costs, associated with searching, buying, provisioning, and maintenance of vendor proprietary appliances and compares them with the coordination costs associated with the adoption of containerized VNFs. This comparative analysis could be used to identify the type of network operators that could serve as key organizers (the network operator who can benefit largely by adopting containerized VNFs) of an open source peer production model as well as other firms that could serve as individual contributors. Furthermore, to identify various rewards and incentives that a managerial firm can leverage to motivate its employees to participate in such an effort, a quantitative survey was conducted (with Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Service Providers) to identify the managerial incentives such as bonuses, rewards, peer recognition, and promotion targeting varied network operator firms to accurately capture and analyze employee interests/motivation.

The virtual cluster needs to deploy virtual nodes with different computing modes for Large-scale data computing jobs including many tasks with different computing modes. There are resource unbalance among the virtual cluster subsets, which is consisted of virtual nodes with the same computing mode. So the resource utilization of virtual cluster is poor due to the time-varying and complexity of workloads. To solve these issues, a novel dynamic deployment model based on Docker was proposed to optimize resource configuration of virtual cluster. Hybrid deployment scheme includes coarse-grained deployment and fine-grained deployment in order to absorb the mutation of resource demand when processing the jobs encapsulated with complex computing logic.This deployment model can reduce job waiting time and improve performance by providing more resource for running jobs. The coarse-grained deployment mechanism has the ability of decreasing deploying overhead and improving stability from global optimal perspective. And the fine-grained deployment mechanism can increases the deploying accuracy from local optimal perspective. The experiments show that this model can improve the execution efficiency of job by 2.3 percent compared with static deploying scheme and improve the virtual CPU utilization about 7.9 to 25.9 percent compared with other approaches.

A Container Orchestration Development that Optimizes the Etherpad Collaborative Editing Tool through a Novel Management System

The use of collaborative tools has notably increased recently. It is common to see distinct users that need to work simultaneously on shared documents. In most cases, large companies provide tools whose implementations have been a very complicated and expensive task. Likewise, their platform deployment requirements should be robust hardware infrastructures. It becomes even more critical when their main target is to reach scalability and highavailability. Therefore, this study aims to design and implement a microservices-based collaborative architecture using assembled containers in the cloud, enabling them to deploy Etherpad instances to guarantee high availability. To ensure such a task, we developed and optimized a central management system that creates Etherpad instances and continuously interacts with other Etherpad tools running on Docker containers. This design goes from the monolithic Etherpad instantiation and handling towards a service architecture, where every Etherpad is offered as a microservice. Furthermore, the management system follows (implements) the Observer, Factory Method, Proxy, and Service Layerpopular design patterns. This allows users to gain more privacy through access to validations and shared resources. Our results indicate both the correct operation in the automation of containers’ creation for new users who register in the system and quantifiable improvement in performance.
