Performance evaluation of rule‐based expert systems: An example from medical billing domain

Abstract: Most of the research in the area of performance evaluation of rule‐based expert systems (RBESs) is focused on verification and validation issues. Many researchers discuss usability, usefulness, portability, and response time for the evolution of RBES. The final goal of all such studies is to construct a system with optimal, accurate knowledge base. Arguably, a system with best knowledge base is actually worthless if it is never utilized in the real world. We have proposed “benefit” as a measure of evaluation a… Show more

“…The production rule is written in the form of conventional if-then statement that is used as conditional control statement in the programming languages. The production rule, however, is based on the dataset and is applied onto the attributes of a database, that makes it different from the if-then used in programming languages [14,17]. Coding in different programming languages requires specialized programming skills, time taken to execute a program, debugging and other incremental costs.…”

“…A rule based expert system has made a lot of benefits in billing decision-making. This reduces erroneous claims and claim rejections, increases customer satisfaction, and improves company's revenue as real time performances are also taking place [17]. [18] in their studies found that automation via automated journal entry will reduce repetitive tasks [19] human errors, time consuming and stress, and that journal entry automation could support accountants effectively in all aspects especially data entry and bookkeeping.…”

“…Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that aims to mimic human thought processes, learning capacity and knowledge storage; the expert systems are part of AI, and in recent times, they are being developed to provide health professionals with support tools for fast and effective diagnosis. [2][3][4] The development of the expert system is carried out through the CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System); this tool focuses on the development of rules for expert systems. The user interface for data collection is done through a web application which involves the use of Apache, as a Web server, MySQL as a database and PHP as a language for the implementation of the web system.…”
