Performance Evaluation of Received Signal Strength Based Hard Handover for UTRAN LTE

Abstract: Abstract-This paper evaluates the hard handover performance for UTRAN LTE system. The focus is on the impact that received signal strength based hard handover algorithm have on the system performance measured in terms of number of handovers, time between two consecutive handovers and uplink SINR for a user about to experience a handover. A handover algorithm based on received signal strength measurements has been designed and implemented in a dynamic system level simulator and has been studied for different pa… Show more

“…This phenomenon has been aggravated by unnecessary handovers, which has adverse effect on the system performance [19]. Too many unnecessary handovers may also result in signaling overhead [8,20]. Therefore, to lower the number of handover, we propose an improved handover mechanism by predicting the moving direction of UEs in this work.…”

“…There are several traditional strategies for making a handover decision based on different mobility characters, like cost function based proposal [4], which established the cost function models to network selection algorithm; and Bit Error Rate based proposal [11], which analyzes the performance on bit error rate and relative signal strength to make a handoff decision; Received Signal Strength (RSS) based proposal [2], which making a handover decision mainly based on RSS and focus on the hard handover for UTRAN LTE network For the traditional handover decision maker algorithms, typically threshold based decision algorithms are used. These algorithms can cause the "ping-pong" effect.…”

“…There are mainly two existing representative handover decision schemes; One is the RSS based scheme [6], and the other is the load based scheme [7]. The RSS based scheme is based on the RSS from the serving cell and the neighbour- ing cells, so that the scheme selects the eNB with the largest RSS.…”

The nonlinear function is very helpful because it fully utilizes the nonlinear characteristic of load difference between the target and serving eNBs after handover decision operation by the Hybrid scheme considering 6 The function (f(L)) on the load difference between the target and serving eNBs by the existing load-based adaptive hysteresis scheme and proposed modified load-based adaptive hysteresis scheme after the Hybrid scheme is applied. both the RSS-based handover algorithm and the load-based handover algorithm.…”
