Performance evaluation of newly designed nozzle on abrasive jet machining characteristics of laminated composites

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of the study is to machine the composites at lower machining time with higher accuracy without causing delamination. Design/methodology/approach Abrasive jet machining is the technology appropriate for machining composite materials to obtain good dimensional accuracy without causing de-lamination. The central composite design was followed in deciding the number of experiments to be carried out. Findings The influence of abrasive jet machining process parameters on machining time, materi… Show more

“…A composite material is a material made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components [1][2][3][4][5]. The individual components remain separate and distinct within the finished structure.…”

“…Since a composite material that could be less cost and reduced weight is capable of replacing the conventional materials, it has to be tested in terms of various strengths based on their replacing application and material. Likewise, lots of research works are being conducted in the composite world [8][9][10][11][12]. Machining of composite by conventional methods may lead to delamination of the composites which in turn will not provide the necessary dimensional aspect.…”

“…An experiment was conducted on carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) 26 and borosilicate glass to find out the effect of SOD, pressure and grain size on MRR and TA using AJM. 27,28 A comparative model 29 was established to investigate the effect of water jet and abrasive jet on the texture of machining area of coal. The effect of simulated input parameters had been investigated by using analysis of variance (ANOVA), grey relational analysis (GRA) in order to evaluate the displacement of cut, kerf width (both top and bottom), surface roughness and machinability using machining parameters i.e., jet pressure, traverse speed, feed rate, SOD on titanium alloys i.e., Ti6AL4V and other brittle materials using garnet abrasive in the abrasive water jet machining (AWJM).…”
