Performance evaluation of MANET and DTN routing protocols

Abstract: Abstract-Unstructured mobile networks (UMNs) are mobile networks in which there is little or no pre-installed infrastructure (access points, antennas), and as such message forwarding is performed among the mobile nodes or within the wireless infrastructure. Routing in those networks occurs either using MANET approaches, where nodes build and end-to-end path among source and destination, or DTN routing, where nodes exchange cached messages whenever they enter in radio range with one another. “…Marine Networks are considered Unstructured Mobile Networks (UMNs) in which there is little or no pre-installed infrastructure (access points, antennas), and as such message forwarding is performed among the mobile nodes or within the wireless infrastructure. UMNs are suitable to a wide range of applications, from environmental monitoring to vehicular networks, mesh networks, among others [6]. Routing in UMNs can be classified into two categories: MANET [7] and DTN [8] routing.…”

“…Del Duca Almeida et al [18] compared MANET and DTN routing protocols in three scenarios using the ns-2 simulator. They observe that the examined DTN protocols (Spray and Wait, Epidemic and PRoPHET) have almost the same end-toend latency, using other mobility patterns with a relatively low amount of nodes.…”

“…Therefore, DTN routing methods are very important because they give influence to communication performance [11]. However, since DTN assumes poor communication environment, it is difficult to judge communication environments, other node situations or whether message was arrived or not.…”
