Performance Evaluation of Integrated OTN/WDM Metropolitan Networks in Static and Dynamic Traffic Scenarios

Abstract: The introduction of optical transport network (OTN) switching technology in metropolitan networks enables efficient wavelength bandwidth utilization and reduces the number of wavelengths, leading to reduced network costs. It has been shown that the use of integrated OTN/WDM switch architecture is cost effective because it reduces the number of short-reach client interfaces and the rack space compared to an architecture that uses a re-configurable optical add-drop multiplexer and a separate standalone OTN switc… Show more

“…Ethernet-based technology [2] is probably the more promising and efficient option for the transport of CPRI traffic, but this technology is not yet mature and requires further investigation. For this reason, other solutions have been proposed such as the method based on Optical Transport Network (OTN) [3,4] and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technologies, which are mature and allow for good performance in terms of the delay and jitter.…”

“…In recent years, some researches have been done on network planning problems in NFV environment, which mainly focused on the SFC routing and Virtual Network Function (VNF) deployment problem (e.g., [3][4][5][6]). To minimize the cost of the VNF deployment in an NFV datacenter environment with Optical Network interconnection [7][8][9] , an integer linear programming model was first established, and then three heuristic algorithms were proposed to solve the integer linear programming model effectively [10]. To minimize the total cost of the energy consumption and the revenue loss due to QoS degradation, an efficient algorithm, which is based on the back-to-back strategy, was designed [11].…”

“…The Common Public Rate Interface (CPRI) [2] has been defined to transport the radio samples between the BBUs and the RRUs through the fronthaul network. The main proposed solutions are: Dark fiber [1,5,6], Passive WDM [1,5], WDM/OTN [7,8], WDM/PON [9,10], and Ethernet [11,12].…”

“…WDM/OTN [7] illustrated in Figure 1c: It allows for the time multiplexing of the CPRI signals on a same wavelength; the solution can save fiber resources, provide OAM functions as well as optical layer and electrical layer performance management and fault detection, provide network protection and ensure high service reliability. The optical bypass of multiplexed CPRI flows allows for low delay that can be even lowered with the introduction of a light OTN [8].…”
