Performance Evaluation of Concrete Bridge Deck Affected by Chloride Ingress

Abstract: Modeling is presented for the effect of cracks on chloride ingress into bridge decks with epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. A finite element diffusion model is used in conjunction with a Monte Carlo probabilistic method to address the inherited randomness of input variables. Field data from New York and Pennsylvania bridge decks under service are used to derive the distributions of diffusion coefficients and concrete cover depths under common specifications and construction practices for bridges in the northeast… Show more

“…Besides the capability of the modeling the cracking effect feature, the model also allows for simplified description of the damage to the waterproof insulation under the asphalt coating. The durability evaluation of selected bridge deck protection strategies is based on the work [4] and [6]. It is enriched by introducing the effects of the aging of concrete via time varied diffusion coefficients [19].…”

“…(see e.g. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]). However, models that aims to investigate durability of bridge deck with cracks or even waterproof membrane both from deterministic, not mentioning probabilistic, standpoint are still under intensive development.…”

“…Preferential pathways for the ingress of deleterious species cause decrease in durability of the structures in question which has a considerable economical impact. In recent years, numerical models taking into account the effect of concrete cracking on the aggressive agents' penetration have been proposed both from the numerical [7,8] and analytical [9,10] standpoint. These models are typically based on T rather significant simplifications concerning description of the physics behind these complex phenomena.…”

“…The pre-requisite is, however, a sufficient database of input quantities including the experience from practical operation because many input quantities cannot be based on models and laboratory measurements only (this being the case, for instance, of geotechnics, see [4]). Those computational methods are used, in particular, when designing the load-carrying systems for underground structures where degradation processes in structures can be also taken into account [8,13]. It is possible to carry out the Performance-Based Design the result of which is structures which consider utility values such as durability, fire resistance, insulation or seismic resistance [9].…”
