Message Encryption in Robot Operating System: Collateral Effects of Hardening Mobile Robots

In human-robot interaction situations, robot sensors collect huge amounts of data from the environment in order to characterize the situation. Some of the gathered data ought to be treated as private, such as medical data (i.e., medication guidelines), personal, and safety information (i.e., images of children, home habits, alarm codes, etc.). However, most robotic software development frameworks are not designed for securely managing this information. This paper analyzes the scenario of hardening one of the most widely used robotic middlewares, Robot Operating System (ROS). The study investigates a robot's performance when ciphering the messages interchanged between ROS nodes under the publish/subscribe paradigm. In particular, this research focuses on the nodes that manage cameras and LIDAR sensors, which are two of the most extended sensing solutions in mobile robotics, and analyzes the collateral effects on the robot's achievement under different computing capabilities and encryption algorithms (3DES, AES, and Blowfish) to robot performance. The findings present empirical evidence that simple encryption algorithms are lightweight enough to provide cyber-security even in lowpowered robots when carefully designed and implemented. Nevertheless, these techniques come with a number of serious drawbacks regarding robot autonomy and performance if they are applied randomly. To avoid these issues, we define a taxonomy that links the type of ROS message, computational units, and the encryption methods. As a result, we present a model to select the optimal options for hardening a mobile robot using ROS.

Due to its accuracy and convenience, the fingerprint is one of the most reliable biometric-based authentication methods for personal identification and providing access control to many applications. However, previous studies have shown that, the fingerprint template is exposed to threat in which the attackers can steal and modified the template to acquire illegal authorization. Therefore, a technique to protect the biometric template has been proposed. The proposed technique involved the biometric template binding by advanced encryption standard (AES-128) key algorithm, which is to provide confidentiality alongside with the offset codebook mode (OCB), an authenticated encryption (AE) mode to provide integrity. Hence, this paper intends to evaluate the security performance of the proposed technique. Three parameters will be analysed which are peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), correlation coefficient and histogram. The efficiency of the proposed technique is measured by the standard of its capability to hide all the information by correlating the relationship between the original and encrypted biometric image using PSNR, correlation coefficient and histogram analysis. The experimental results show good security performance in the given parameters.

A Distinctive Afo Algorithm for Secured Medical Image Transmission Using Chaotic Crypto Technique

The proposed system aims to develop a secure medical image encryption algorithm by combining chaotic map and cryptographic technique. In this paper, an innovative AFO (Arnold Cat Map, Fibonacci sequence and One Time Pad) algorithm for medical image encryption has been proposed. This AFO algorithm consists of four phases, in which diffusion, and confusion takes place two times. The pixels of the original (OI) and the key (KI) image are diffused by Arnold Cat Map first. Then the pixels of diffused images are confused with the help of Fibonacci sequence. Next, N unique random numbers are generated. Using these random numbers, the confused OI and KI image pixels are again permuted. The values of the resultant OI and KI pixels are pooled by utilizing the Vernam Cipher (also known as One Time Pad) in the final confusion phase. The quality of the reconstructed and an encrypted images are evaluated by some of the most widely used objective measures like MSE (Mean Square Error), PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), AD (Average Difference), MD (Maximum Difference), MAE (Mean Absolute Error), (CC) Correlation Coefficient, IF (Image Fidelity), SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Metrics). Results of these measures commends that the proposed AFO encryption algorithm is suitable for secure medical image transmission.
