Performance Evaluation of Authentication-Encryption and Confidentiality Block Cipher Modes of Operation on Digital Image

Abstract: Abstract-Recently, security of digital images has attracted significant attention. This paper evaluates the performance of authentication-encryption and confidentiality block cipher modes of operation, on digital image. Authentication-encryption scheme, such as Offset Code Book (OCB) mode, offers both privacy and authenticity; that is to say, this scheme provides data authenticity without increasing the cost of encryption. The performance of this mode is compared with other confidentiality modes of operation, … Show more

“…The encryption of two messages, which have two blocks of plain text in common, results in the same ciphered blocks applying the ECB mode. In addition, when it is used in images (cameras are one of the most extended sensors), it has well-known problems (Mehran and Khayyambashi, 2017). This study presents different effects due to the encryption process.…”

“…This section presents the methodology which will be carried out to conduct security performance evaluation of encrypted template. In order to conduct the evaluation, several standard measurements are used to evaluate which focus on confidentiality [23,24]. The measurements are 1) peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), 2) correlation coefficient and 3) histogram.…”

“…A comprehensive search of the relevant literature returned only one related article although it is not from biometric area. The closest research is from [23], which have been proposed AE mode to protect digital image. Their results show that the model based on OCB scheme, by both AES and Serpent algorithms, exhibits good performance on a digital image compared to the models based on other modes.…”

“…The use of ACM in an image encryption changes the position of the pixels and it does not alter the value of the pixels. After N iterations, the image pixel positions are fully transformed and the original image appears intelligible [20]. But, if iterated adequate number of times [6], the original image reappears.…”
