Performance evaluation of a surface acoustic wave analyzer to measure vocs in air and water

Abstract: The performance of a fast gas chromatograph equipped with a Surfdce Acoustic Wave (SAW) detector i s evaluated in this p a p . Tbe instrument was developed for the rapld analysis of volatile oqanic compounds in air or water. Tbe SAWdetectol; the fist and only known integrating detector forgas chromatographs (GG), operates by responding to the muss of material exiting the GC column. Material adhering to the SAWsurface changes its operating frequency, which & detected by the system electronics and converted into… Show more

“…More specifically, there have been an increasing number of applications using portable GC-SAW detectors for analyzing various air/water/soil samples [43][44][45][46][47][48][49]. For example, in a fairly recent development from Watson, a novel field portable GC system coupled to an SAW detector (called the 7100 Fast GC Analyzer) is used for high-speed analysis of VOCs in air and water [50]. A unique feature of this SAW detector is that the quartz crystal is bonded to a thermoelectric cooling element, which cools the crystal surface down to l10-608C.…”

“…Due to the use of microelectronics technology for production of MEMS devices, microchannels are normally obtained in a planar shape. An important use for microchannels that normally relies on a planar structure is the manufacturing of chromatographic columns for gas or liquid analysis, most of them built on a silicon wafer (25)(26)(27)(28) . In our former works, not only planar but also three-dimensional microchannels were machined and sealed using conventional tools, i.e.…”

“…Several successful demonstrations of electrical sensors for detection of DOMs in water have been reported, such as the polymer-absorption chemiresistor-based microsensor [11], the surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor [12,13], and the polyphenol-coated carbon electrode voltammetric sensor [14]. Most of the reported electrical sensors have shown certain levels of specificity by employing specially designed polymers to selectively interact with the target analytes.…”
