Performance Evaluation and Comparison of Satellite-Derived Rainfall Datasets over the Ziway Lake Basin, Ethiopia

Abstract: Consistent time series rainfall datasets are important in performing climate trend analyses and agro-hydrological modeling. However, temporally consistent ground-based and long-term observed rainfall data are usually lacking for such analyses, especially in mountainous and developing countries. In the absence of such data, satellite-derived rainfall products, such as the Climate Hazard Infrared Precipitations with Stations (CHIRPS) and Global Precipitation Measurement Integrated Multi-SatellitE Retrieval (GPM-… Show more

“…A study conducted by [65] in North Wollo, including the Kobo area, showed that CHIRPS rainfall has a strong correlation with observed rainfall. The authors of [66] also validated CHIRPS rainfall in the Zeway basin of Ethiopia and has a good correlation. Other studies in the upper Blue Nile Basin of Ethiopia by [27,35] confirmed that CHIRPS rainfall is suitable and performs well in the SWAT model simulation.…”

“…Data 5 harian CHIRP diagregasi ke hujan harian menggunakan data harian Climate Forecast System (CFS) NOAA resolusi 0,05 o . Tahap akhir yaitu penggabungan data CHIRP dengan data hujan observasi menggunakan algoritma pembobotan sehingga dihasilkan data CHIRPS (Hordofa, et al, 2021).…”

“…We evaluated the performance of the downscaled and bias-corrected CMIP5 models over the Ziway Lake Basin using monthly observations of rainfall, minimum temperature, and maximum temperature from 1983 to 2005 at eleven stations. We applied three statistical evaluation metrics that include percent bias (PBIAS), root mean square error (RMSE), and correlation coefficient (r) [42]. The foremost measures of time series data including climate change are trend analysis, which identifies the general increasing or decreasing tendencies of the climate variables [43].…”
