-It is obvious that power quality is an important characteristic of today's distribution power systems as loadsbecome more sensitive on the other hand nonlinear loads are increasing in the electrical distribution system. Considering the distributed nature of harmonic loads, the need for distributed power quality improvement (PQI) is inevitable. From years ago, researchers have been working on various kinds of filters and devices to enhance the overall power quality of power system, but today the nature of distribution system has been changed and power electronic based DGs play an important role in distribution grids. In this paper, a thorough survey is done on power quality enhancement devices with emphasis on ancillary services of multi-functional DGs. A literature review is also done on microgrids concept, testbeds and related control methods. Although there were some applications of DGs for PQI improvement these applications were not defined multi-functional DGs. Various control methods are studied and categorized regarding different viewpoints in the literature. Finally, a couple of thorough comparisons are done between the available techniques considering the nature, capabilities, advantages and implementation costs.

Active mass damper (AMD) control system is proposed for high-rise buildings to resist a strong wind. However, negative influence of noise in sensors impedes the application of AMD systems in practice. To reduce the adverse influence of noise on AMD systems, a Kalman filter and a linear matrix inequality-(LMI-) based filter are designed. Firstly, a ten-year return period fluctuating wind load is simulated by mixed autoregressive-moving average (MARMA) method, and its reliability is tested by wind speed power spectrum and correlation analysis. Secondly, a designed state observer with different filters uses wind-induced acceleration responses of a high-rise building as the feedback signal that includes noise to calculate control force in this paper. Finally, these methods are applied to a numerical example of a high-rise building and an experiment of a single span four-storey steel frame. Both numerical and experimental results are presented to verify that both Kalman filter and LMI-based filter can effectively suppress noise, but only the latter can guarantee the stability of AMD parameters.

Summary The increased usage of nonlinear loads in the distribution system network with deep integration of renewable energy sources imposes the need for advanced control to improve power quality. With the objective to attain desired sinusoidal voltage waveshape at the common utility point, unity power factor operation, and reduction in harmonics, a swarm intelligent enhanced dual extended Kalman filter (DEKF) control technique for improving the performance of shunt active power filter (SAPF) is proposed in this paper. A photovoltaic (PV) array is integrated at the DC‐bus which supplies the required load power thus reducing the grid power demand. A single sensor‐based control is used to track the maximum power from the two‐stage PV array. The enhancement of the SAPF performance requires proper tuning of parameters; constriction factor‐based particle swarm optimization (PSO) is adopted in this regard. The DEKF estimates both state and parameter from the nonlinear system for generating a reference signal. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is compared with the Extended Kalman filter (EKF)‐based PV‐SAPF system using MATLAB/Simulink. To verify the efficacy of the controller, an experimental PV‐SAPF prototype is developed in the laboratory and tested under balanced and unbalanced supply, dynamic load as well as varying irradiance conditions.
