Performance Assessment of a Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal System in Mediterranean Climate—A Numerical Simulation Approach

Abstract: This study addresses the thermal and energy performance assessment of a Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal (BIPVT) system installed on the façade of a test room in Solar XXI, a Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) located in Lisbon, Portugal. A numerical analysis using the dynamic simulation tool EnergyPlus was carried out for assessing the performance of the test room with the BIPVT integrated on its façade through a parametric analysis of 14 scenarios in two conditions: a) receiving direct solar gains on th… Show more

“…This work aims to develop a detailed experimental investigation of a BIPVT system to assess its performance and thermal behaviour. The experimental part of the investigation complements the authors' numerical work given in [10]. The main novelty of this work is the study of this systems in a Mediterranean climate-characterized by mild temperatures-, as BIPVTs are often used in a quite different type of climate, in which there is a more accentuated temperature gradient between outdoors and indoors during the year and especially in colder temperatures.…”

“…Also to note is the work presented in [83], in which they assess a BIPVT-PCM prototype via genetic algorithm optimization. Having as case study the same living lab in which these prototypes were tested, in [84] it is possible to find a numerical study of a full scale BIPVT system. In [85], the experimental results for this BIPVT system are presented.…”

“…The Solar XXI building had no active cooling system, and the heating temperature was 20 • C, provided by radiators. The air infiltration value used was 1.32 ACH (Air Changes per Hour) [48].…”
