Four promising varieties of sugarcane, along with the commercial variety, GT54/9 were evaluated for yield, yield components, and quality traits. The environments were different ages of harvest time (11, 12, and 13 months old) of two plant cane crops (2-years) at El-Mattana Agriculture Research Station farm during (2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons). The stability analysis of studied traits was performed. The results indicated that the promising varieties, environments, and their interaction had a highly significant effect on all studied traits in both the seasons except the age at the harvest time on purity in both seasons, the effect of the interaction on sucrose as well as a pol in second season only and on fiber in the first season only. It is obvious from the results that none of the tested varieties was superior to GT 54/9 for cane and sugar yield and stable implying the necessity of widening the genetic base to produce improved promising varieties. The stability analysis showed that GT 54/9 variety was stable for stalk height, stalk diameter, brix, reducing sugar, and fiber and recorded the highest cane yield and sugar yield. G2003/49 was stable for cane yield, sugar yield, brix, pol, and fiber. It ranked third in cane yield and the second sugar yield. The variety G2003/47 was stable for stalk diameter, sucrose, sugar recovery, and fiber and ranked fourth for cane yield and the third rank for sugar yield. G2004/26 was stable for stalk diameter, cane yield, reducing sugar, and fiber. It occupied the second and third ranks for cane yield and sugar yield respectively. G84/47 variety was stable for cane yield, sugar yield, brix, sucrose and fiber and ranked last for cane and sugar yield.

Sugarcane is a main cash crop of Pakistan grown extensively in varying agro-climatic conditions. It confers a sound economic base to the sugar industry and also supports paper and chipboard manufacturing industry. The rapid human population growth in the country has increased the sugar demand. The present position of low yield and recovery in sugarcane stipulates the breeders to take realistic innovative attempts in varietal development programs to evaluate and release new sugarcane of high cane and sugar yield potential to fulfill the sugar demand in the country. Limited work regarding appraisal of variation in lately evolved sugarcane genotypes for morphological and quality-related characters has been reported in Pakistan. Evaluation of sugarcane genotypes for desired attributes acceptable to growers and sugar mills is necessary before releasing them as commercial varieties. The study was undertaken to evaluate variations in sugarcane genotypes employing four morphological (Cane thickness, cane height, millable stalks, and cane yield) and four quality-related (Brix, pol, purity, and commercial cane sugar percentage) traits. Experiments were conducted in plant crop for two consecutive years 2018-19 and 2019-20 during the autumn cropping season at Makli farm of PARC-National Sugar and Tropical Horticulture Research Institute (NSTHRI), Thatta, Pakistan. A total of four sugarcane genotypes i.e., YtTh-1701, YtTh-1705, YtTh-1707, and YtTh-1730 against standard variety Thatta-10 as check were tested. The genotypes were developed from the exotic fuzz of China. The trials were conducted under RCBD with three replications. The ANOVA exhibited significant (p≤0.05) differences among the genotypes for cane thickness, cane height, number of millable canes, and cane yield, whereas, non-significant (p≥0.05) variations were observed for brix%, pol%, purity% and commercial cane sugar percentage (CCS%). The mean data showed a maximum cane yield of 150.84 t ha-1 for YtTh-1705, followed by YtTh-1707 (145.42 t ha -1 ) and YtTh-1701 (142.29 t ha -1 ). Whereas, the minimum yield of 104 t ha -1 was recorded in YtTh-1730 against the check variety (137.09 t ha -1 ). Similarly, the maximum CCS of 12.08% was displayed by YtTh-1705, followed by check variety Thatta-10 with CCS of 11.73%. Whereas, the CCS% in other sugarcane genotypes was low as compared to check variety. Among the inspected sugarcane genotypes YtTh-1705 was found promising due to highly improved performance for quantitative and qualitative parameters. Therefore, can be included in the gene pool for further varietal development studies.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the G x E (genotype x environment) interaction using AMMI and GGE biplot analysis to identify sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) genotypes that combine high yield and stability in multi-location trials. Twelve advanced clones generated in the sugarcane breeding programs along with three standards (Co 86032, CoC 671 and Co 09004) were evaluated for cane and sugar yield using randomized complete block design with three replicates over two plant crops and one ratoon during 2019 to 2021 across two years and locations. Data was collected on yield traits and sugar quality characters. Stability parameters were determined. The data was also investigated using GGE biplot and the AMMI models. The results of combined analyses of variance exhibited significant differences among genotypes at the three test environments and when locations were combined. The GE interaction was also significant for all the traits, indicating inconsistency of performance of the genotypes over the locations and seasons. Pooled data analysis of 15 genotypes indicated the superiority of Co 15017 and CoN 15071 for CCS yield across six environments. Two clones, Co 15017 and CoSnk 15102 recorded higher mean cane yield as compared with three standards across the six experimental conditions. Multivariate (AMMI and GGE biplot) statistical analysis indicated that CoSnk 15102 exhibited higher and more stable commercial cane sugar yield and cane yield per hectare, indicating this genotype’s suitability across the test locations. The results of such multi-environmental trials with the elucidation of GE interaction using AMMI and GGE are of great significance in guiding the selection and recommendation of stable and superior varieties in sugarcane production zones.
