In this study, the effects of the use of improved fusel oil on engine performance and on exhaust emissions in a spark-ignition engine were investigated experimentally in consideration of the water, gum, and moisture content at high compression ratios according to TS EN 228 standards. In the study, a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, spark plug ignition engine with an 8/1 compression ratio was used at three different compression ratios (8/1, 8.5/1, 9.12/1). Experiments were performed for six different ratios of fuel blends (F0, F10, F20, F30, F40, and F50) at a constant speed and different loads. The data obtained from the experiments were compared with the original operating parameters of the engine while using gasoline. According to the test results, the optimal engine performance was at a 9.12/1 compression ratio and with a F30 fuel blend. With the increase from an 8/1 to 9.12/1 compression ratio for the F30 fuel blend, the overall efficiency increased by 6.91%, and the specific fuel consumption decreased by 2.35%. The effect of the optimum fusel blend on the emissions was also examined and CO emissions were reduced by 36.82%, HC emissions were reduced by 23.07%, and NOx emissions were reduced by 15.42%, while CO2 emissions were increased by 13.88%.

As there is a growth in industrialization globally, the reduction of harmful pollutants is of considerable significance, especially in the transportation sector. In this paper, the impacts of various engine operating parameters are investigated on the performance and emissions of a CRDI (common rail direct injection) diesel engine. The primary aim of this study is to optimize emissions and efficiency parameters to achieve the optimal configuration parameters for the engine by employing the desirability approach of RSM (response surface methodology) techniques which is a suitable optimization approach that can save a lot of repetitive testing.After RSM modelling it was observed that the optimized engine settings of input factors are diesel/linseed blend concentration 8.10%, FIP (fuel injection pressure) 600 bar, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) level 4.667%, and load on engine 9.33kg. On these constant hold values, the optimized output torque, BTE (brake thermal efficiency), BMEP (brake mean effective pressure), mechanical efficiency, HC (hydrocarbon), and CO2 carbon dioxide have obtained 20.04 Nm, 26.035%, 3.474 bar, 52.503%, 28.14ppmv, and 7.319 %vol. respectively. Aforesaid predicted values were validated experimentally and errors in predicted values are in a limited range.

Comparison of Performance Properties and Prediction of Regular and Gamma-Irradiated Granular Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate Modified Asphalt Mixtures

The utilization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (WPET) as aggregate substitutes in pavement has been extensively promoted because of its environmental advantages. However, previous studies have shown that a high percentage of WPET reduces the performance of the pavement. To increase the durability of pavement and mitigate the environmental issues caused by WPET, WPET is treated with gamma-irradiation as a component in asphalt mixtures. The study objectives were to investigate the feasibility of using WPET granules as a sustainable aggregate on asphalt mixture stiffness and rutting and predict the asphalt mixture performance containing irradiated WPET via an RSM-ANN-framework. To achieve the objectives, stiffness and rutting tests were conducted to evaluate the WPET modified mixtures’ performance. The result indicated that samples containing 40% irradiated WPET provided a better performance compared to mixtures containing 20% non-irradiated WPET, increasing the stiffness by 27% and 21% at 25 °C and 40 °C, respectively, and rutting resistance by 11% at 45 °C. Furthermore, both predictive models developed demonstrated excellent reliability. The ANN exhibited superior performance than the RSM. The utilization of WPET as aggregate in asphalt mixtures represents a way to addressing related recycling issues while also improving performance. With gamma-irradiation treatment, the utilization of WPET can be increased with improved asphalt mixture performance.
