In case of public transportation, the protection of the environment and the economic operation are highlighted issues. The cold start and the cold operational procedure of buses must be optimal both in the scope of environment protection and economic aspects (fuel consumption, wear and tear In case of applying diesel engines in motor vehicle operation, the dynamic characteristics of the engine are significant. There is a connection between the performance and the economic features, the elements of the system mutually affect one another (Burke, 1993;Al-Hasan, 2007;MacMillan, 2009;Rimkus et al., 2013) The value of fuel consumption projected to 100 km route significantly increases in case of urban traffic.

The most important advantage of biogas is that one can retrofit easily the conventional combustion engines to be used for the new fuel but remain the problem of pollutant emission. In this paper, the effect of the biogas composition on the emissions of CO and NOx in an SI engine is investigated numerically. Three compositions were studied (CH4:40 %, CO2:60 %), (CH4:50 %, CO2:50 %), (CH4:60 %, CO2:40 %), at equivalence ratio (ϕ) from lean to rich. The non-adiabatic partially premixed combustion model with probability density function (PDF) method and Zimont model of the turbulent flame speed are used. It was found that increasing CO2 in the biogas lowers NOx emissions significantly, whereas, CO was found to be very low, and appears only at high CH4 concentration. A biogas with (CH4:60 %, CO2:40 %), burning at about (ϕ = 0.9), i.e. slightly lean mixture, and advanced spark timing (between 10 to 20°.) seems to be a very a realistic combination in terms of biogas composition, stoichiometry and spark timing. It is recommended that, to accomplish some upgrading, in case of biogases with low CH4 percentage, to get it up to 60 %.

Limited fossil fuel supplies and the necessary reduction in toxic fumes emission to the atmosphere are the main motives in conducting a search for the new, effective energy supplies. The one with potential is biogas. It is the product of natural fermentation processes of municipal waste in landfills or is produced in biogas plants out of agricultural and green waste. Due to creation under different conditions, its chemical composition varies. This is enormous obstacle in its effective application. Biogas is easily applied to fuel spark-ignition engines however intensive attempts are made to employ it in much more effective compression-ignition engines. Application of biogas require the use of dual-fuel CI engine. The point of the research described in this paper is to show the influence of different methanecarbon dioxide composition ratio in biogas on dual-fuel CI engine effectiveness.
