Purpose During the past several years, research and studies in the field of solar energy have been continuously increased. One of the substantial applications of solar energy is related to industrial utilization for the drying process by efficient heat transfer methods. This study aims to upgrade the overall performance of an indirect solar dryer using a solar absorber extension tube (SET) equipped with ball-type turbulators. Design/methodology/approach In this work, three various SETs including hollow (SET Type 1), 6-balls (SET Type 2) and 10-balls (SET Type 3), have been simulated using Fluent software to evaluate heat transfer characteristics and flow structure along the air passage. Then, the modified solar drying system has been manufactured and tested at different configurations. Findings The findings indicated that adding a SET improved the performance notably. According to the results, using turbulators in the tube has a positive effect on heat transfer. The highest overall thermal efficiency was found in the range of 51.47%–64.71% for the system with SET Type 3. The maximum efficiency increment of the system was found as 19% with the use of SET. Also, the average specific moisture extraction rate, which is a significant factor to survey the effectiveness of the dehumidification system was found between 0.20 and 0.38 kg kWh−1. Originality/value In the present study, a novel SET has been developed to upgrade the performance of the solar dehumidifier. This new approach makes it possible to improve both thermal and drying performances.

This study examines the heat and mass transfer coefficient, thermal effusivity, and other thermal properties of solar-dried cocoyam chips, as well as the drying kinetics. The research also assessed the economics of the solar dryer. For these reasons, a solar dryer with a partitioned collector was developed that creates a double airflow travel distance to delay the airflow inside the collector. The partitioning of the collector delays the airflow and helps to create more turbulence for the airflow with increased energy. The solar dryer was locally developed at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and tested during the humid crop harvesting period of September for the worst-case scenario. The obtained drying curves and kinetics for cocoyam drying are subjected to the vagaries of weather conditions. The drying rate showed declining sinusoidal characteristics and took about 25 h to attain equilibrium. Analysis of the airflow velocity showed gravitation between laminar and turbulent flow, ranging from 171.69 to 5152.77. Specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and effusivity declined with moisture content while the thermal diffusivity increased. However, the values of thermal effusivity ranged from 12.2 to 47.94 W.s1/2.m−2.K−1, which is within the range of values for insulators. The heat and mass transfer coefficient varied as a function of the airflow velocity. Fitting the drying curve into semi-empirical models showed that the two-term model was the best-fitted model for the experimental data from drying cocoyam. Using the solar dryer in Nigeria can save $188.63–$1886.13 in running costs with a payback period of 0.059–0.59 years (21.54–215.35 days) at a rate of 10–100% of usage.

Summary An experimental investigation on the performance of a solar air heater (SAH) system has been performed using a new model of v‐corrugated absorber plate having perforations jets. The effectiveness of new model has been compared with the conventional v‐corrugated absorber plate under identical operating conditions to display the effectiveness of new model. The new collector has been referred to Model‐1, whereas the conventional model has been referred to Model‐2. The experimentations have been conducted in December 2020. The results demonstrate that the performance of Model‐1 is considerably higher than Model‐2 by 9%, 11%, and 11.5% for the air mass flowrates 0.01, 0.015, and 0.02 kg/s, respectively. As mass flowrate is increased, the performances of both models have increased, where the highest efficiencies of Model‐1 and Model‐2 have been found 84.5% and 73%, respectively. A substantial difference in temperature has been found in Model‐1 as compared to the rest model. Regardless of the air velocity values, the maximum outlet temperatures have been found in Model‐1, whereas the peak plate temperatures have been observed in Model‐2. The improvement in the performance of Model‐1 confirms that the utilize of perforations jets v‐corrugated absorber plate has an extreme action on the rate of heat transfer.
