Performance Analysis of the PMD Camboard Picoflexx Time-of-Flight Camera for Markerless Motion Capture Applications

Abstract: The PMD Camboard Picoflexx Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera is evaluated against the Microsoft Kinect V2 to assess its performance in the context of markerless motion capture system for human body kinematics measurements. Various error sources such as the warm-up time, the depth distortion, the amplitude related error, the signal-to-noise ratio, and limitations such as their dependence on the illumination pattern and on the target distance, are studied and compared. The Picoflexx device is also compared to the Kine… Show more

“…resolution, especially at a distance of less than 0.3 m [88,89]. A high frame rate and a high depth resolution are necessary for the accurate detection of breathing movements of preterm neonates because of their high respiratory rate on the one hand and the low amplitude of their abdominal movement in the vertical direction on the other hand.…”

“…Given that a joint angle difference of more than 5 • is considered a clinically significant difference for gait analysis [55], we claim the accuracy of our CoLiTrack approach to be sufficient. In comparison, results from instrumented crutches [56] as well as from a smart walker (rollator + depth camera) [57] using principal component analysis to estimate the shank angle showed deviations of up to 10 • . Moreover, our real-world experiment demonstrated that neither ground reflectance nor clutter has an influence on CoLiTrack performance.…”

“…For each joint, the three-dimensional position is provided, as well as the orientation as quaternions. The center of the IR camera lens represents the origin of the 3D coordinate system [32,33].…”
