The Distributed Queue Dual Bus protocol (DQDB) has been adopted by IEEE and by the International Standard Organisation as a metropolitan area network standard. DQDB is also a European Telecommunication Standard. Using distributed simulation, this paper analyzes the performance of standard DQDB networks, DQDB networks with slot bandwidth reuse, as well as DQDB networks with slot preuse and reuse. The results suggest that although slot preuse is a conceptual mirror image of slot reuse, the maximum improvement in throughput of the networks, the causes of unfairness, and the stations which are unfairly favoured differ depending on the choice of bandwidth single-use, reuse, preuse, or pre-and-reuse. All quantitative performance measures were estimated to a specific precision using automated distributed stochastic simulation. The design of the DQDB simulators and practical implications of the results are also discussed.

Performance measures obtained by stochastic simulation are estimates, and one must consider the precision of the estimates before making any constructive conclusions about the investigated systems. This paper applies an automated distributed simulation method, called Spectral Analysis in Parallel Time Streams, to speed up production of performance estimates, and for run-length determination in the simulation of Highspeed Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). This method makes sequential simulators suitable for parallel execution on multiprocessors and/or networked computers. At runtime it estimates the information content of observations generated during simulation, generates a point estimate and confidence interval, and directs the run to continue until an estimate is obtained that achieves or exceeds our required level of precision. The application of this methodology for studying high-speed MANs, the speedup, intermachine communication and "warm-up" overhead, and the run lengths needed to produce estimates with a specific level of precision, are reported for each of the parameters investigated. Practical implications are discussed.

The performance of prioritized DQDB MAN under bursty tra c environment is studied in this paper. The tagged node model is adopted to simplify the analysis. The processes of the packet arrivals to the tagged node, the empty-slot pattern from upstream, and the request pattern from downstream are assumed to be Markov M o dulated Poisson Processes, a more general and appropriate model to capture the bursty characteristics existing in the tra c ows in high-speed networks. A s t o c hastic reward nets model for the prioritized DQDB MAN is presented. With the help of the Stochastic Petri Net Package (SPNP) developed in Duke University, the steady state and as well as the transient b e h a vior of packet loss ratio of tagged node are investigated. The in uence of the burstiness of the empty-slot pattern, packet arrival and request pattern on the tagged node's performance are examined.
