Performance Analysis of Outdoor mmWave Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: Abstract-Ad hoc networks provide an on-demand, infrastructure-free means to communicate between soldiers in war zones, aid workers in disaster areas, or consumers in device-to-device (D2D) applications. Unfortunately, ad hoc networks are limited by interference due to nearby transmissions. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) devices offer several potential advantages for ad hoc networks including reduced interference due to directional antennas and building blockages, not to mention huge bandwidth channels for large data… Show more

“…3(b) demonstrates the impact of NLOS interferers when the tagged transmitter is in the LOS condition. It manifests that, with a LOS transmitter associated with the typical receiver, the NLOS interference is also negligible for the reasons which are similar to those in cellular networks [8].…”

“…In addition, ξ only depends on the path loss exponent α and can easily be evaluated numerically and offline. Overall, the expression in Proposition 1 is much easier to evaluate than existing results [7], [8] that contain multiple nested integrals.…”

“…In [3], the authors explore mmWave frequency bands to design a 5G enhanced Local Area Network (eLAN). While [4] proposes a general framework to analyze the coverage and rate performance of mmWave networks, [5] proposes a tractable mmWave cellular network model and analyzes the coverage rate. These design features of mmWave makes encourages radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting (EH), where a node may harvest the ambient mmWave energy incident on it.…”
