Performance Analysis of Hybrid MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract: The rapid growth in demand for broadband wireless services coupled with the recent developmental work on wireless communications technology and the static allocation of the spectrum have led to the artificial scarcity of the radio spectrum. The traditional command and control model (Static allocation) of spectrum allocation policy allows for severe spectrum underutilization. Spectrum allocated to TV operators can potentially be shared by wireless data services, either when the primary service is switched off o… Show more

“…However, research efforts have been made in [8]- [13] ranging from field survey to protocol and model developments, to improve on spectrum utilization so that secondary use of radio spectrum is possible. Attard et al [14] provides occupancy rate of the spectrum band of 2.4 GHz using a cooperative sensing technique, with a combination of metrics such as AND, and OR on the measurement data to define the utilization of the spectrum.…”

“…With specified definition of node structure, overall transmission configuration, packet format and a new MAC protocol, the simulation result was examined by detailed graphical result analysis. In [32] and [33], two improved MAC protocols based on CSMA/CA MAC protocol and the IEEE 802.11b were measured using OPNET, both of which extended the use of white space of spectrum. In [72], a multi-hop cellular network working with CR technique was implemented by OPNET.…”

“…Generally, MAC protocols in DCRNs are divided into three categories: random access, time-slotted, and hybrid [9] [10]. Recently, the hybrid protocol has been considered the most suitable for CRNs because it tries to achieve a tradeoff between the random access and time-slotted protocols [14].…”
