Performance analysis of conformal conical arrays for airborne vehicles

Abstract: Conformal array apertures have great potential for providing high performance, low weight systems with little or no impact to the aerodynamic design of the air vehicle. A performance analysis of conformal conical arrays for a national airborne radar application is presented. The conical array geometry is chosen for its similarity to an aircraft or missile nosecone. Performance capabilities are analyzed for a number of antenna performance parameters including scan volume, sidelobe levels, grating lobes, beamwid… Show more

“…In this section, numerical results are presented. Let us remind that any state of polarisation can be synthesised in (16) and (18); in the examples below, we take circular polarisation as an example to validate and illustrate the potentialities of the tri-polarised array and the proposed approach. Linear and conformal arrays are considered in the simulation.…”

“…For the extension to a conformal array, we should convert the response of each element from its local coordinate system to the global coordinate system, the details can be seen in [16]. In Section 4, we will give an example of the conformal array.…”

“…In addition, it is found that the proposed array provides -40 dB with the same number of elements and base radius of the other two designs. On the other hand, at the same number of elements and base radius, the proposed stacked array provides 12° lower beamwidth than in [20], but is higher than [6] by 4°. Therefore, we can conclude that the proposed stacked array has efficient scanning performance with almost constant beamwidth due to the proposed weighting function in Equation (35) which also reduces the sidelobe levels.…”
