This paper provides the equivalent maximum likelihood (ML) detector at the destination of multi-branch dualhop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay networks. Complexity-efficient detections by extending both the complexityefficient sphere decoder (CSD) and the fixed complexity sphere decoder are proposed. Comparing to the direct link and the cooperative partial detection, our detection method based on the CSD shows the almost-fixed, reduced complexity at a negligible performance loss. Although detect-and-forward relaying is the main focus, this detection also performs well in amplify-andforward relaying. The simulation results show that the CSD performs nearly optimal ML performance, while keeping the complexity of MIMO relay detection fixed and reduced, making this algorithm suitable for hardware implementation.

In this paper, performance of relay assisted wireless link is evaluated in the presence of rayleigh fading where mobile handset is equipped with single transmit antenna, relay is equipped with multiple transmit and receive antennas, and destination has multiple receive antennas. Data are modulated using QPSK or 16 QAM or 64 QAM modulator at handset and send to relay which combined and decode the incoming signal using Maximum Likelihood decoding and further encode the symbols using STBC, and the encoded data are split into n streams which are simultaneously transmitted using n transmit antennas of relay. It is observed that relay with 2 transmit antennas and 2,3,4,5 and 6 receive antennas provides 13 dB, 11 dB, 9 dB,6 dB and 5 dB gains respectively compared to direct link at 10 -5 . And there are around 1.5 dB to 6 dB gains for increasing number of receiving antennas of relay from 2 to 3 or 3 to 4 but there are very little gains for increasing number of receiving antennas of relay from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6.

This study presents the symbol error probability (SEP) analysis of relay-multiplexing scheme in relay-assisted cellular systems such as the IEEE 802.16j and upcoming fifth generation (5G) systems. The availability of multiple relay paths in these systems motivates two relay configurations: (i) relay diversity and (ii) relay multiplexing. Available works in the literature have focused on the relay diversity methods. In this study, we explore the relay-multiplexing alternative whereby relay stations (RSs) act as independent data pipes for transmitting multiple independent data streams from the base station (BS) to the mobile station (MS). We examine the case when the BS is equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas, transmitting independent data streams to several MS simultaneously via different relay paths. We derive analytical expressions for the SEP performance of the proposed scheme, and also complement the analysis with simulations. The results show that parallel relaying of independent data streams via different RSs has acceptable SEP performance while boosting the capacity of the system linearly with the number of parallel RSs available in the system. The results also show that when this relaying approach is combined with the emerging massive MIMO techniques, a tremendous boost in data rate can be achieved.
