Perfluoroalkyl substances and organochlorine pesticides in sediments from Huaihe watershed in China

Abstract: contamination by PFASs in the upstream of the Huaihe River was more severe than that in the downstream, which was mainly caused by interception from dams, locks and industrial emissions. And OCPs from tributaries, especially the Yinghe River and Wohe River, were higher than those from Huaihe mainstream, and primarily came from historical inputs.

“…The concentration of ∑DDTs was lower than reports in the Qiantang River, China [ 15 ], the Rivers in middle Denube, Serbia [ 44 ] and on the Soan River, Pakistan [ 43 ]. Whereas higher concentration of ∑DDT was recorded in this study area as compared to reports on the Huaihe River, China [ 46 ]. The total sum of OCPs showed a higher range than values in Lake Qarun, Egypt [ 47 ], the Rivers in middle Denube, of Serbia [ 44 ] and in Soan River, Pakistan [ 43 ].…”

“…In each sample of DP, SPM and sediment, the concentration of following 32 selected PCBs were measured: IUPAC PCB numbers 8,28,37,44,49,52,60,66,70,74,77,82,87,99,101,105,114,118,126,128,138,153,156,158,166,169,170,179,180,183, 187 and 189. In each sample of DP, SPM and sediment, the concentration of following OCPs was measured: aldrin, α-BHC, β-BHC, δ-BHC, γ-BHC (lindane), 4,4′-DDD, 4,4′-DDE, 4,4′-DDT, dieldrin, endosulfan I, endosulfan II, endosulfan sulphate, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide (isomer B) and methoxychlor.…”

“…In order to increase crop yields, excessive fertilizer and pesticides were applied by farmers during crop growth periods [46,47]. Thus, nonpoint sources resulting from agricultural fertilizers and soil erosion have greatly degraded the water environment and caused serious pollution incidents in this area [32,48,49].…”
