Perfluorinated Polymer Monolayers on Porous Silica for Materials with Super Liquid Repellent Properties

Abstract: We report on the preparation of water-and oil-repellent surfaces using surface-attached monolayers of perfluorinated polymer molecules. A covalent attachment of the polymer molecules to the substrate surfaces is achieved by generation of the polymer chains through starting a surface-initiated radical-chain polymerization of a fluorinated monomer. To this, self-assembled monolayers of azo initiators are attached to SiO2 substrates, which are used to kick off the polymerization reaction in situ. The growth of th… Show more

“…15 Over the last decade, high-density and well-defined polymer brushes have been readily synthesized, since controlled polymerization techniques have been exploited for surface-initiated polymerization. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which is a type of the living radical polymerization, has been widely employed for the formation of polymer brushes because ATRP is compatible with various functionalized monomers.…”

“…Although wetting prevention in MD is the main process requirement, it has not been comprehensively studied and relatively few investigations have attempted to solve the wetting problems in MD membranes [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Some authors have investigated the improvement of hydrophobic properties of membranes employing novel materials or applying surface modification through manipulating surface chemistry and surface geometry by nanoparticle coating and surface fluorination [21][22][23][24][25][26][27].…”
