Perfluorinated Compounds in Relation to Birth Weight in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study

Abstract: Perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid are perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) widely distributed in the environment. Previous studies of PFCs and birth weight are equivocal. The authors examined this association in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), using data from 901 women enrolled from 2003 to 2004 and selected for a prior case-based study of PFCs and subfecundity. Maternal plasma samples were obtained around 17 weeks of gestation. Outcomes included birth weight z scores, preterm… Show more

“…Epidemiologic research, which exists primarily as cross-sectional studies, on the possible effects on female reproductive health has so far produced inconsistent results. Fei et al (2009) observed an association between high serum levels of PFOS and PFOA and a longer time to pregnancy, but no such association was found in other studies (Vestergaard et al, 2012;Whitworth et al, 2012). PFOS and PFOA pass through the placenta (Needham et al, 2011) and are excreted in milk, although less so than other POPs (Haug et al, 2011;Mannetje et al, 2012).…”

“…Perinatal exposure to a variety of environmental toxins has been associated with low birth weight, including phthalates [50], perfluorinated compounds [51][52][53] and occupational exposures to pesticides [54]. Furthermore, there appear to be relationships of environmental toxins with birth at lower gestational age, and phthalates [55,56] and perfluorinated compounds [51,53] with preterm birth.…”

“…Also another study from the US (n = 293) reported levels of cord blood PFOA (and PFOS) to be inversely associated with birth weight, new-born head circumference, crown-heel length, and ponderal index (Apelberg et al, 2007). Data from a subgroup of the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort study (n = 901 women; 2003-2004) showed lower birth weight among infants born to mothers in the highest quartiles of PFOA (and PFOS) compared to lowest quartiles (Whitworth et al, 2012a). Also a British study found that girls born to mothers with maternal serum concentrations of PFOA in the upper tertile weighed less (130 g (95%CI: -237, -30)) at birth compared with girls born to mothers with serum concentrations in the lower tertile (Maisonet et al, 2012).…”
