Show more

“…They observed an increased hemoglobin content in ewes during the late gestation period, suggesting it was due to increased oxygen demand and higher metabolic rate during gestation. The enzyme AST is related to the metabolism of the liver, and higher concentrations may be due to insufficient feed intake (Lotfollahzadeh et al, 2016;Antunovic et al, 2011) or altered liver functions related to pregnancy toxemia (Moreira, Assis, Lima, Facury, & Borges, 2019). AST averages observed in the present study are within the normal reference values of Nasciutti et al (2012) and Santos et al (2011).…”

“…This relationship can be explained by magnesium acting as a cofactor for parathormone in the calcium homeostasis mechanism, an essential route in peripartum (Ataollahi et al, 2020). Concentrations of this mineral are influenced by dry matter intake (Moreira et al 2019), which is lower in this phase of the pregnant ewe.…”

“…Metabolic diseases that can occur during this period are characterized by nutritional deficiencies in which the amount of nutrients ingested is not sufficient to meet production and physiological maintenance demands. In this context, pregnancy toxemia is the most studied metabolic disease in sheep farming and affects sheep in the last six weeks of pregnancy when the fetus reaches 70% of its growth (MOREIRA et al, 2019). The high energy demand for fetal formation does not keep pace with dry matter intake, characterizing a state of negative energy balance, at which point a high rate of lipolysis occurs, raising levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ketone bodies and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) (Souto et al, 2019).…”
