Introduction In Brazil, dental trauma (DT) is considered a public health problem. However, few studies in the literature report the prevalence of DT in disabled persons (DP). Objective The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of DT among DP seen at the Dental Clinic for Special-Needs Patients (COPE) of the Catholic University of Brasília. Material and method A retrospective, descriptive study analyzing 73 medical charts of DP seen at the COPE between 2014 and 2016 was conducted. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected. The t-test was used to check for significant differences between the categories of the variables analyzed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23.0 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for all statistical analyses (p < 0.05). Result A DT prevalence of 33/73 (45.2%) was found among DP. The predominant type of fracture was crown fracture (26/33-78.8%). The majority of patients were over 20 years old (63/73 - 86.3%), at a proportion significantly higher than those for the other age categories (p < 0.008). The patients in the sample had a variety of diseases, predominantly in the following categories: mental (22/73- 30.1%), multiple (19/73-26%), and systemic (14/73-19.2%). Conclusion A high prevalence of DT was found in DP, with the majority of cases being related to mental and multiple diseases. Further research is needed to assess the prevalence of DT in this patient group throughout the Federal District.

Resumo Introdução Pessoas com Deficiência (PcD) são aquelas que possuem alteração física, intelectual, social ou emocional. Podem ter impedimentos que duram um curto período de tempo ou por toda sua vida. Objetivo Descrever o perfil clínico dos pacientes com deficiência internados no Instituto de Saúde da Criança do Amazonas (ICAM). Material e método Foram analisados 34 pacientes e coletados dados, como gênero, faixa etária, procedência, patologia de base e condição de saúde bucal. Os dados obtidos foram organizados e tabulados no Microsoft Excel 2013. Resultado Na distribuição por gênero, verificou-se 70% do gênero masculino (mais prevalente) e 30% do feminino. Quanto à faixa etária, a idade predominante foi 8 anos. A maioria dos pacientes (60%) era do interior do Amazonas e 40% eram da capital. No que diz respeito à patologia, a Doença Neurológica teve prevalência em 44% dos casos, seguida das seguintes patologias: Síndrome de Down 18%, Transtorno de Espectro Autista 12%, Mielomeningocele 12%, Surdez 3%, Diabetes 3%, Síndrome de Prader Willi 3%, Síndrome Moebius 3% e Síndrome de Lennox 3%. Na condição bucal, 44% da amostra teve condição precária, 32% deficiente e 24% satisfatória. Conclusão A maioria das crianças era do gênero masculino, faixa etária de 8 anos, procedentes do interior do Amazonas, com deficiência neurológica e condição bucal precária, sugerindo que a presença do cirurgião-dentista, compondo a equipe multidisciplinar hospitalar, auxilia a traçar um plano de tratamento preventivo e curativo adequado a esses indivíduos.

A Convenção dos Direitos das Pessoas com Deficiência destaca e caracteriza estes indivíduos como aqueles que possuem limitações ou incapacidades para o desempenho de atividades, impossibilitando sua participação integral e permanente na sociedade. As doenças relacionadas à cavidade bucal e a necessidade de tratamento odontológico podem ser amplamente observadas em pessoas com deficiências. A ausência de manutenção e cuidados odontológicos podem acarretar em perdas dentárias, diminuindo consideravelmente a qualidade de vida destes indivíduos. Deste modo, o objetivo deste trabalho é relatar os diferentes tipos de reabilitações protéticas removíveis adaptadas para cinco pacientes com necessidades especiais atendidos no projeto de extensão “Conquistando saúde: atendimento odontológico de pessoas com deficiências” do curso de odontologia da Universidade Luterana do Brasil (ULBRA) Canoas/RS. As limitações quanto a compreensão e colaboração para o tratamento de cada caso foram contempladas. As próteses parciais removíveis demonstram ser uma alternativa viável e resolutiva por tratar-se de uma terapia menos invasiva, apresentando custos mais acessíveis, além de propiciar e facilitar a higienização.
