Perfil de habilidades adaptativas e funcionalidade de pessoas com síndrome de Down

Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition, characterized by trisomy 21, being the most prevalent genetic alteration in the population. In São Paulo, some institutions provide educational services for the population with DS, one of which represents care for 99 people with the diagnosis, ranging in age from 8 to 57 years. The present study aimed at documental analysis of the results of assessments carried out with this population, specifically in the field of adaptive skills/functionality, cognitive profile, school performance and motivation to learn. The results indicate a difference in the functional profile between children and adults, with the group of adults performing better in adaptive skills, in addition to identifying correlations between adaptive skills and writing (rs=0.590; p<0.05), performance in mathematics (rs=0.763; p<0.05), cognition (rs=0.621; p<0.05) and internal motivation (rs=0.596; p<0.05). We conclude that adaptive skills and functionality constitute an important field of work with this population segment.
