Perfectionism, Fear of Failure, and Affective Responses to Success and Failure: The Central Role of Fear of Experiencing Shame and Embarrassment

Abstract: positive affect after success, whereas perfectionistic concern over mistakes and perceived parental pressure showed a positive relationship with fear of experiencing shame and embarrassment and with negative affect after failure. Moreover, fear of experiencing shame and embarrassment fully mediated the relationship between perfectionistic concern and negative affect and between coach pressure and negative affect. The findings demonstrate that fear of experiencing shame and embarrassment is central in the perfe… Show more

“…Correlations between all dimensions of perfectionism and fear of failure reported medium to strong positive correlations and are similar to previous studies (Conroy et al, 2007;Kaye et al, 2008;Sagar & Stoeber, 2009) providing, once more, the concurrent validity of the MPS-F p .…”

“…Frost-MPS's concurrent validity has been ascertained and, as expected, scores have exhibited appropriate convergent validity with measures of sport anxiety and fear of failure (Conroy et al, 2007;Frost & Henderson, 1991;Kawamura et al, 2001;Sagar & Stoeber, 2009), providing additional support for its construct validity. In previous studies, concern over mistakes dimension was strongly correlated with competitive anxiety (Frost & Henderson, 1991;Hall et al, 1998;Kawamura et al, 2001).…”

“…This represents a problem because perfectionistic concerns-while not necessarily leading to impaired performance-have shown close links with characteristics and processes that may impair performance. Whereas perfectionistic strivings in athletes are associated with characteristics and processes that are likely to have positive effects on athletes' performance such as hope of success, competitive self-confidence, approach goal orientations, and self-serving attributions of success and failure (Stoeber & Becker, 2008;Stoeber, Stoll, Pescheck, & Otto, 2008), perfectionistic concerns in athletes are associated with characteristics and processes that are likely to have negative effects such as fear of failure, competitive anxiety, avoidance goal orientations, and self-depreciating attributions of success and failure (Sagar & Stoeber, 2009;Stoeber & Becker, 2008;. Moreover, perfectionistic concerns are associated with athlete burnout not only in adult athletes, but already in adolescent athletes (Gould, Udry, Tuffy, & Loehr, 1996;A.…”
