Perfectionism and eating attitudes in portuguese students: A longitudinal study

Abstract: Our findings contribute to a more clear understanding of the association between perfectionism and eating disorders. SOP and SPP were prospectively associated with abnormal eating attitudes/behaviours and SOP was found to be predictive of diet concerns and overall eating disturbance.

“…Regarding gender differences in this association with SOP, the present findings are similar with those found in our study in an adult population, in which SOP was associated with disordered eating behaviour, but only in females (Macedo et al, 2007). In our longitudinal study, also in adults (with a female sample), SOP was a significant predictor of the total variance of the diet concerns dimension of EAT-40, 1 and 2 years after baseline (Soares et al, 2009). One possible explanation for these findings is that different aspects of perfectionism may play different roles in females and males, in different developmental stages.…”

“…The literature on this issue has been mainly conducted in girls samples, so we were interested in exploring these topic in a population of both genders, as we did in adult samples (Macedo, Soares, Azevedo, Pereira, Maia, & Pato, 2007;Soares, macedo, Bos, Marques, maia, 2009). …”

“…Both self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism have shown positive correlations with all three symptom groups, but socially prescribed perfectionism typically shows larger correlations than self-oriented perfectionism [10,13] except with dieting where some studies found self-oriented perfectionism to show larger correlations than socially 1 The model differentiates a third form of perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism, which is unrelated to eating disorder symptoms [1] and so was disregarded in the present study.…”

“…Overall the findings suggest that both forms of perfectionism are positively related to eating disorder symptoms [1,[7][8][9][10], but may show different relations with different groups of eating disorder symptoms [11].…”

“…Hewitt and Flett's (1991) multidimensional model differentiates self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism with the former an indicator of perfectionistic strivings and the latter an indicator of perfectionistic concerns (Frost et al, 1993;Stoeber & Otto, 2006). Studies investigating self-oriented perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and disordered eating typically find socially prescribed perfectionism to show larger and more consistently positive correlations with eating disorder symptoms than self-oriented perfectionism (e.g., Peixoto-Plácido, Soares, Pereira, & Macedo, 2015;Soares et al, 2009;Welch, Miller, Ghaderi, & Vaillancourt, 2009). …”
