Background: Research on grief, depression, and anxiety reactions following job loss is sparse. More insight in this matter could be important for the development of preventive and curative interventions targeting different manifestations of emotional distress following job loss, including grief reactions. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine job loss-related grief reactions in relation to depression and anxiety symptoms. Method: A sample of 525 Dutch workers (59.8% women, mean age of 50.6 years) who had lost their job was recruited. Latent class analysis was used to examine whether separate classes could be distinguished based on the endorsement of grief reactions and symptoms of depression of anxiety. We also examined factors associated with class membership. Results: Four classes were identified, including a so-called 'mixed', a 'grieving', a 'depressed', and a 'resilient' class. Job loss circumstances and coping strategies (but not socio-demographic and work characteristics) were associated with class membership. Conclusion:These results shed light on unique characteristics that might be targeted with specific clinical methods to increase mental health of different subgroups of individuals confronted with job loss. Reacciones de duelo, depresión y ansiedad luego de la pérdida del empleo: patrones y correlatosAntecedentes: La investigación acerca de las reacciones de duelo, depresión y ansiedad luego de la pérdida del empleo es escasa. Una mayor profundización en esta área podría ser importante para el desarrollo de intervenciones preventivas y curativas dirigidas a las diferentes manifestaciones del sufrimiento emocional que ocurre luego de la pérdida del empleo, incluyendo las reacciones de duelo. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar las reacciones de duelo asociadas a la pérdida del empleo en relación a síntomas de depresión y ansiedad. Método: Se reclutó una muestra de 525 trabajadores holandeses (59,8% mujeres, edad promedio de 50.6 años) que perdieron su empleo. Se utilizó análisis de clases latentes para examinar si se podían distinguir clases separadas basándose en la confirmación de reacciones de duelo y síntomas de depresión y ansiedad. También examinamos factores asociados con la pertenencia a las clases. Resultados: Se identificaron cuatro clases, que incluyeron una clase llamada 'mixta', una 'en duelo', una 'deprimida' y una 'resiliente'. Las circunstancias de la pérdida del empleo y las estrategias de afrontamiento (pero no las características del empleo ni las sociodemográficas) se asociaron con la pertenencia a las clases. Conclusión: Estos resultados revelaron las características únicas que podrían ser blanco de métodos clínicos específicos para mejorar la salud mental de los diferentes subgrupos de personas que enfrentan la pérdida del empleo.

ResumenEl Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) fue elaborado para evaluar las estrategias cognitivas de regulación emocional frente a eventos displacenteros. Recientemente fue desarrollada una versión breve (CERQ-18) en Perú y los resultados fueron favorables al evaluar su equivalencia factorial respecto al CERQ. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la relación del CERQ-18 con criterios externos e internos. En 286 estudiantes universitarios de edades entre 18 y 30 años, se hizo un análisis correlacional con medidas de depresión y ansiedad. Los resultados mostraron que el patrón correlacional del CERQ-18 y estas medidas fue teóricamente coherente, y además equivalente al del CERQcon dichas variables.La confiabilidad de las dimensiones del CERQ-18 fue adecuada, y la estimación del error de medición fue similar que enla versión extensa. Finalmente se realizó una comparación estadística entre coeficientes de confiabilidad de las distintas versiones breves halladas. Se discuten las implicancias de los resultados. Palabras clave: regulación emocional, confiabilidad, validez, CERQ-18, universitarios AbstractThe Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) was developed to assess cognitive emotional regulation strategies against unpleasant events. It was recently developed a short version (CERQ-18) in Peru and the results were favorable to assess their factorial equivalence regard to CERQ. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of CERQ-18 with external and internal criteria. In 286 college students aged 18 to 30 years old, was used a correlational analysis with measures of depression and anxiety. The results showed that the correlation pattern CERQ-18 and these measures was theoretically coherent, and also equivalent to the CERQ with these variables. The reliability of the dimensions of CERQ-18 was adequate, and estimate of the measurement error was similar to the long version. Finally, was conducted a statistical comparison between reliability coefficients of different short versions found. The implications of the results are discussed.

Grieving for Job Loss and Its Relation to the Employability of Older Jobseekers

Introduction: Loss of employment is an experience that is lived and interpreted differently depending on a series of individual variables, including the psychological resources available to the affected person as well as their perception of their degree of employability. Losing one’s job can be one of the most painful and traumatic events a person has to withstand. Following a dismissal, the worker needs to overcome a period of emotional adaptation to the loss. But that period of grieving can also condition the job searching process of the individual and can be influenced by different variables, highlighting the age and work experience. The objective of this study is to analyse the relationship between intensity and type of affliction due to the loss of employment in older workers and their level of employability. Methods: We carried out a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 140 unemployed participants, from 19 to 65 years of age—users of Job Orientation in the Public Employment Service of Andalusia (Spain). Of the total participants, 66 were unemployed and over 45 years of age. They all took the Labour Insertion Potential Assessment Test and the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, adapted for job loss. Results: Significant differences are shown in the grieving process due to loss of employment between both groups, with the older unemployed living the process more intensely. In relation to the employability potential, differences are found between both groups in terms of availability, perceived difficulties and fears. Interrelationships between total grieving intensity and the importance that older jobseekers give to work are also indicated. Conclusion: Loss of employment and the psychological and health consequences of this situation are identified with those that arise in the grieving process. Older workers present a series of features that determine that their job loss grieving process is more intense and lasts longer than that of other younger workers, regardless of whether the job loss was recent or not. On the other hand, it is shown that the intensity of grieving for job loss is related to the decrease of certain variables that are part of the concept of employability.
