Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty following endarterectomy.

Abstract: Recurrent occlusive disease was found by noninvasive methods and confirmed arteriographically in 7 patients who had undergone endarterectomy for stenosis of one [5] or both iliac arteries [1] or the subclavian artery [1]. Three patients with iliac artery stenosis had percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) 1 to 5 years after endarterectomy. One patient with stenosis of the external iliac artery had PTA 4 years after endarterectomy, and dilatation was repeated 7 months later because of recurrence. One patie… Show more

“…PTA is a stressful event for the intima and underlying media, and, subsequently, reactive intimal hyperplasia with fibrosis can occur as part of the healing process. 16 This can ultimately result in extreme calcification of the arterial wall. We encountered eight patients with a medical history of PTA alone and one patient with PTA and stent.…”

“…Previous studies have shown that PTA with selective stenting of recurrent disease after previous endarterectomy is feasible and safe. 13,22,23 During the procedure, we placed a primary stent in a limited number of cases (n ϭ 24). This is not to be compared with the placement of a stent in RSFAE, which is mandatory because of the downstream location of the postendarterectomy intimal flap.…”
