Percutaneous Management of Renal Cysts: Results of a Four-Year Study

Abstract: A standardized technique for percutaneous therapeutic management of renal cysts is described. After partial aspiration of the cyst fluid, the fluid is replaced with Pantopaque, Renografin 60 and air. Fifty-six renal cysts so treated were followed at intervals of up to four years and 68% showed a 50% or more decrease in cyst volume. Only 13% of a control group of 15 renal cysts which were percutaneously punctured but did not have Pantopaque instilled showed a 50% or more decrease in cyst volume. The results sug… Show more

“…Perkütan kist aspirasyonu ve skleroterapi basit böbrek kistlerinin tedavisinde poliklinik şartlarında dahi uygulanabilen, minimal invaziv tedavi seçenekleri olmalarına rağmen yüksek yineleme oranları bildirilmektedir (8,9). Özellikle orta büyüklükteki kistlerin tedavisinde daha fazla tercih edilmektedir (10).…”

“…Many scle rosing agents were used heretofore. They either did not show an adequate effect or were highly toxic [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Recently, 95% ethanol and minocycline were used as scle rosing agents [7,8], The efficacy of ethanol treatment was excellent (97%) 3 months or more after sclerotherapy.…”

“…Recurrence of simple renal cysts after aspiration on the same or larger size is seen in 30-78% of the cases [ 1 ]. Var ious sclerosing agents including glucose [2], phenol [3], iophendylatc [4], urea cholohydrolactate [5] and Pantopaque [6] have been used in the past to treat simple renal cysts.…”

“…Most intermediate-sized cysts may be aspirated percutaneously (229)(230)(231). In some instances sclerosing agents or, alternatively, radiocontrast material has been instilled into the cyst cavity in an attempt to prevent recurrence (232)(233)(234). Large cysts (greater than 500 ml in volume) are usually drained surgically.…”
