Aim: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the preferred method for long-term enteral feeding of patients who cannot be fed orally for various reasons and have a functioning gastrointestinal system. In this study, we aimed to present and discuss the demographic characteristics, indications, and early and late complications of patients implanted with the endoscopic PEG in our center. Material and Method: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated age, gender, chronic diseases, indication for PEG, complications during the procedure, complications arising from PEG during patient follow-up, and survival times of 84 patients who underwent PEG between January 2016 and January 2020 from the electronic medical file system. Results: Of the 84 patients enrolled in the study, 59.5% (n=50) were male and 40.5% (n=34) were female. The mean age of the patients was 61.35±19.52 years. The endoscopic PEG success rate was 97.6%. Of the requests for PEG, 58.6% (n=50) were for patients in intensive care units. The most common indications for PEG insertion were cerebrovascular accident (CVA), chronic nervous system disease, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Complications related to PEG were observed in 11 patients. All complications were mild, and no severe complications were observed. While one of the complications developed in the early period ( 30 days). No deaths from causes related to the PEG procedure have been observed. Conclusion: In patients with inadequate oral intake, PEG is a safe and appropriate option for continuous enteral feeding because of its low complication and mortality rates.

Background and objectives: Skull base fractures have high mortality and morbidity rates and constitute a significant medical issue. The aim of the present study was to review the demographic characteristics, common locations and causes of the skull base fractures retrospectively. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on patients who attended the Intensive Care Unit/Radiology Clinic of Adiyaman University Training and Research Hospital between 2015 and 2018 and were found to have skull base fractures. The data were accessed via PACS system of the hospital database. Age, gender, cause of the trauma, type of the skull base fracture, imaging findings and outcome of the enrolled patients were analyzed. Results: Total 138 cases who met the study criteria were enrolled in the study. The causes of the skull base fracture were as follows: fall 52.2%, traffic accident 36.2%, pounding 3.6%, firearm injury 0.7%, sharp object injury 0.7%, and other causes 6.5%. There was a statistically significant (p<0.001) difference in rate of skull base fracture caused by traffic accident between the ≤18-year group and 19-45 age group. The difference between the types of epidural hematoma was not significant in all age groups (p= 0.156); however, there was a statistically significant difference for gender (female vs. male 26.1%73.9%, p=0.025). Conclusion: Skull base fractures were more common in fall from height and traffic accidents. In order to reduce skull base fractures, it is recommended to take preventive precautions for falls from height and traffic accidents. IMC J Med Sci 2022; 16(2): 002. ÖzGiriş: Perkütan endoskopik gastrostomi (PEG), çocuklarda yutma güçlüğü, nörolojik, gastrointestinal ve özofagus hastalıklarında çocukların uzun süreli beslenmelerinde en sık kullanılan enteral beslenme şeklidir. PEG'nin evde bakımında aileler fiziksel, psikolojik, sosyal ve ekonomik sıkıntılar yaşayabilmektedirler. Bu çalışmada, bir çocuk cerrahisi kliniğinde izlenen PEG'li çocukların ailelerinin evde bakımda yaşadıkları sorunlar incelenmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışma, Haziran-Ağustos 2014 tarihleri arasında Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Cebeci Hastanesi, Çocuk Cerrahisi Kliniği'nde tanımlayıcı kesitsel tipte yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın örneklemini PEG ile izlenen 20 çocuğun primer bakımını üstlenen kişiler oluşturmuştur. Veriler, araştırmacılar tarafından literatür doğrultusunda hazırlanan 26 soruluk veri toplama formu kullanılarak, yüz yüze görüşme tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Klinikte PEG ile izlenen çocukların primer bakımını üstelenen kişilerin hepsi annedir. Annelerin %80'i bakım, %70'i maddi ve %60'ı ev işlerinde sıkıntı yaşadıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. PEG'nin evde bakımında en çok yaşadıkları sıkıntılar pansuman (%80), mama (%40) ve malzeme temini (%20) ile ilgilidir. Anneler, pansuman ile ilgili en çok işlemi yaparken zarar vermekten korktuklarını, mama ile ilgili ise ürün seçimi ve hazırlanmasında sıkıntı yaşadıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Annelerin bu sıkıntıların çözümüne yönelik klinik ekipten beklentileri pansuman, komplikasyon, mama gibi konularda uygulamalı eğitim (%90) ve klinik ekiple daha etkili iletişimdir (%5). Sonuç: Hemşirelerin ebeveynlere PEG'li çocuğun evde bakımına yönelik uygun, etkili ve uygulamalı eğitim sağlamasının, ailelerin sıkıntıları ile baş etmelerine yardımcı olacağı düşünülmektedir.Introduction: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the most commonly used form of enteral nutrition in the long-term diet of children with dysphagia, neurological, gastrointestinal and esophageal diseases. Families may experience physical, psychological, social and economic problems in home care. In this study, families whose children with PEG were followed-up in a pediatric surgery clinic were examined with respect to the problems experienced in the home care. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Cebeci Hospital Pediatric Surgery clinic. The study sample was made up of 20 primary caregivers of children with PEG. Data were collected by interviews with a questionnaire prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature. Descriptive statistics was used for evaluation of the data.
