Percutaneous endoluminal stent and stent-graft placement for the treatment of femoropopliteal aneurysms: Early experience

Abstract: These results in a small number of patients warrant further investigation to evaluate the role of percutaneous stents in femoropopliteal aneurysms. Until further data of clinical studies are available, this method cannot be recommended, and it cannot replace surgical treatment.

“…Diagnostic usefulness of colour Doppler compared with angiography relies on the possibility to precisely measure the inner diameter of proximal and distal necks allowing correct sizing of the covered stent. Moreover, the real extent of the aneurysm can be effectively assessed indicating the sites suitable for proximal or distal fixation of the device [84,85,86].…”

“…Recently, however, new techniques including PIER and percutaneous implantation of stent grafts seem to offer promising results in the endovascular treatment of long SFA occlusions [6,7]. Although stent grafts have been successfully used in the treatment of peripheral aneurysms as well as SFA occlusions, requirement of a large introducer system and high cost may limit their extensive use [6,7]. On the contrary, PIER may offer a reasonable alternative with a lower cost and smaller introducer system which is probably associated with fewer puncture site complications [1,2,3].…”

“…It is known that standard intraluminal PTA for such lesions is associated with a relatively low technical success and unacceptable long-term patency rates [5]. Recently, however, new techniques including PIER and percutaneous implantation of stent grafts seem to offer promising results in the endovascular treatment of long SFA occlusions [6,7]. Although stent grafts have been successfully used in the treatment of peripheral aneurysms as well as SFA occlusions, requirement of a large introducer system and high cost may limit their extensive use [6,7].…”
