Perceptual uncertainty and line-call challenges in professional tennis

Abstract: Fast-moving sports such as tennis require both players and match officials to make rapid accurate perceptual decisions about dynamic events in the visual world. Disagreements arise regularly, leading to disputes about decisions such as line calls. A number of factors must contribute to these disputes, including lapses in concentration, bias and gamesmanship. Fundamental uncertainty or variability in the sensory information supporting decisions must also play a role. Modern technological innovations now provide… Show more

“…The hawk eye technology in tennis, which is used for the verification of controversial line calls, was investigated by seven of these studies (Abramitzky, Einav, Kolkowitz, & Mill, 2012;Anbarci, Lee, & Ulker, 2014;Carboch, Vejvodova, & Suss, 2016;Clarke & Norman, 2012;Cross, 2014;Mather, 2008;Nadimpalli & Hasenbein, 2013). The remaining two studies focused on the Decision Review System, covering various decisions in Cricket (Borooah, 2016), and the goal line technology in football (Kolbinger, Linke, Link, & Lames, 2015).…”

“…These results concerning usage and "success" rate are used for various intentions. As mentioned above, the studies of Mather (2008) and Carboch et al (2016) looked for perceptual uncertainty and patterns of umpire errors. Anbarci et al (2014) examined the influence of gender on the use of the challenge system.…”

“…We also examined the original patent application, which is available online from the European Patent Office (reference number WO 01/41884). We discovered an article in Scientific American (Fischetti, 2007) and a recently published analysis of line calls in tennis (Mather, 2008).…”

“…We selected this game on the basis of its natural default option-line judges remain silent to indicate that the ball was "in," but make an overt response by shouting "out" to reject the default. Further, such a task involves graded perceptual difficulty (17). A status quo bias in this task can be modeled by assuming that a decision criterion is biased depending on whether the default is set to "IN" or "OUT" (Fig.…”
