This research focuses on the relation between color and psychological functioning, specifically, that between red and performance attainment. Red is hypothesized to impair performance on achievement tasks, because red is associated with the danger of failure in achievement contexts and evokes avoidance motivation. Four experiments demonstrate that the brief perception of red prior to an important test (e.g., an IQ test) impairs performance, and this effect appears to take place outside of participants' conscious awareness. Two further experiments establish the link between red and avoidance motivation as indicated by behavioral (i.e., task choice) and psychophysiological (i.e., cortical activation) measures. The findings suggest that care must be taken in how red is used in achievement contexts and illustrate how color can act as a subtle environmental cue that has important influences on behavior.

The results of numerous empirical studies, which are examined in this article, indicate that, in general, humor can beneficially influence mental health. Specifically, it has been observed that humor äs a response (e.g., laughter) is associated with a reduction in some existing mental health Problems, whereas humor äs a psychological process (sense of humor) appears to moderate the perceived intensity of negative life events. Several suggestions are provided about how these different kinds of humor might occasion their effects. A number of issues are also identified that warrant further empirical examination. These include whether, and if so how, the relationships between humor and mental health are affected by individual difference variables, (e.g., personality, gender, extent of actual effect of negative life events, degree of appreciation of humorous experimental Stimuli); how much each of the above mentioned types of humor contribute to effects observed in any given Situation; how the relationships in question are affected by different kinds of humorous Stimuli; and various aspects of the broader experimental context.In the humor literature, various theoretical and empirical analyses are evident regarding the relationship between certain aspects of humor, on the one band, and psychological and physical states of a person on the other. One possible connection is that components of humor are the effects of such states. This report is the fourth in a series from a large scale study that examines the effects of three office color interiors (white, predominately red, and predominately blue-green) on worker productivity. Matched on relevant variables, participants were assigned to one of three offices and performed simulated office tasks for four consecutive days. Productivity was measured through workers' task performance and task accuracy, taking into account individual differences in environmental sensitivity (i.e., stimulus screening). The findings suggested that the influences of interior colors on worker productivity were dependent upon individuals' stimulus screening ability and time of exposure to interior colors. Implications of office workers' long-term productivity are discussed in relation to issues concerning the visual complexity of interior environments.
