Perceptual meaning of the estimated parameters of the autoregressive model

Abstract: This paper proposes an interpretation of the estimated parameters of the autoregressive model, used to model texture content of images, that corresponds to human perception. First, we will define briefly the AR model and the parameters estimation process. A perceptual interpretation of the AR estimated parameters will be then proposed and discussed. In particular, a computational measure to estimate the degree of randomness/regularity of textures is proposed based on the estimated parameters. Experimental resu… Show more

“…Increasing a model's order may achieve some improvement in visual quality of the synthesized images, but the price in terms of feature vector size and feature extraction complexity is high. So we decided to use only the NSHP version with order (1,1). This means that we have a set of four estimated parameters.…”

“…Retrieval experimental results presented later in this paper show that this version of the autoregressive model performs very well. In [1], we have proposed a perceptual interpretation of the estimated parameters of the autoregressive model as a measure of the degree of regularity/randomness of a texture.…”

“…Because of lack of space, we are not able to explain all the details related to these content representation models and to the similarity function. The reader can refer to [9] for more details about the perceptual model, to [5] for more details about the autoregressive model, and to [8] for more details about the similarity measure.…”

“…The set of features of the perceptual model have a perceptual meaning by construction. The set of features derived from the autoregressive model have no perceptual meaning by construction, however we have proposed in [3] a perceptual interpretation of the set of features derived from the autoregressive model. This perceptual interpretation consists in considering those features as a measure of the randomness/regularity of the texture.…”
