“…Indeed, there is evidence pointing to consistent sex differences in symptom expression and severity (Davis and Blaney 1976;Pokorny and Overall 1969;Tsuang, Dempsey, and Rauscher 1976;Wahl and Herzog 1976;Weich 1968), age of onset (Achte 1967;Bleuler 1950;Forrest and Hay 1972;Kramer 1976;Noreik and Odegaard 1967;Nystrup 1976;Malzberg 1935;McCabe 1975;Pollack, Levenstein, and Klein 1968), and premorbid competence (Allon 1971;Farina, Garmezy, and Barry 1963;Klorman, Strauss, and Kokes 1977;Zigler, Levine, and Zigler 1977) in schizophrenia. Rather than attempting to explain away these sex differences, it may prove more fruitful to assess the role of sex (from its biological to social processes) in the etiology of schizophrenia (Belmont et al 1964;Flor-Henry 1974;Forrest and Hay 1972;Rosanoff et al 1934).…”
