Perceptual Control Theory and Ecological Interface Design: Lessons Learned from the Contgrol Display Unit

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to assess the applicability of Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) and Ecological Interface Design (EID) to the radio communication domain, and to perform an analytical evaluation between PCT and EID using the Control Display Unit (CDU) interface as a vehicle. A PCT-based analysis of the pilot-CDU interactions was performed and an Abstraction Hierarchy representation of the radio communication domain was developed. Two interface designs followed and their effectiveness was assessed… Show more

“…The theories describe the interactions between individual and complex tasks in terms of a naturalistic dynamic decision-making process. For example, Vicente’s (Chéry, Vicente, & Farrell, 1999; Jamieson, Miller, Ho, & Vicente, 2007; Vicente & Wang, 1998) work examines human–computer interaction in industrial scale control systems (nuclear power plant, petrochemical production, radio communication, thermo-hydraulic processor).…”

“…Unfortunately, EID displays developed to show functional, high-level relationships in aviation have been largely limited to proofs-of-concept (Dinadis andVicente, 1999, Chery, Vicente, andFarrell, 1999). Further, displays developed in this fashion were typically not implemented in a simulator, and thus did not provide the opportunity for empirical evaluation.…”

“…Many models are groundbreaking in characterizing complex troubleshooting as a distinct breed of inquiry, different in kind not just degree from well-structured problem solving procedures -a view that guides our own research (Mirel, 2003). These models capture complex problem solving's distinct socio-cognitive processes of data analysis, qualitative and quantitative reasoning, judgment under uncertainty, and domain-based knowledge work (Hoc, 2002;Vicente, 1999;Chery et al, 1999;Hollnagel et al, 1999;Rassmussen et al, 1994). Many models represent collaborative processes, as well.…”
