“…Thus, if knowledge about how to use native tree species is an integral factor in determining whether silvopastoralists will plant those species, declining ecological knowledge about native tree species may drive or exacerbate declines in silvopastoral tree diversity, inhibiting restoration efforts. Smallholder preference for trees with multiple uses is widely recognized (Boffa et al ; Garen et al ; Frey et al ) and agroforestry proponents often promote “multipurpose trees” (Nair ; Harvey et al ; Cullen et al ). However, to our knowledge, our study is the first to link the number of known uses with the likelihood of planting silvopasture trees.…”

“…On the other hand, declining interest in planting native trees may also suggest a need for more effective and persistent extension and outreach programs related to agroforestry and landscape‐scale restoration efforts. Lower interest in planting native trees may reflect a failure to reap anticipated immediate gains, leading to owners and managers placing less emphasis on native tree species among their workers (Frey et al ; Hayes ). The difference in motivations for planting trees is reflected in the importance of different predictor variables in 2008 and 2014.…”

“…A clear and consistent message toward what makes successful silvopastures coupled with best management practices needs to be developed for silvopasture in the Northeastern United States. Little knowledge of landowners about agroforestry practices is not unique to the Northeastern United States (Barbieri and Valdivia 2010), and farmer education has been shown to lead to successful agroforestry adoption (Frey et al 2007). While farmers interviewed in this study favored trees, many of them were unaware of how to manage trees.…”

“…In general, subsistence farming and an emphasis on the role of trees in improving the soil quality of lands are characteristic of tropical forestry plantation systems, and environmental sustainability is a major driving force for development and adoption of man‐made agroforestry systems (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development ; Sustainable Forestry Initiative ; Frey et al . ).…”
